Hi,

Just taken the front wheel from my K1100RS for a new tyre and the fitter suggested I might need new discs as they are 'loose'. Now, I assume they are meant to be, being floating discs, will someone please confirm or otherwise.
The inners are conected to the outers with circular things and clips to hold in place.

Thanks.

Ivan

Those are referred to as bobbins, and are what you want to replace. I assume this wasn't a BMW tech telling you to start replacing the rotors?

A little movement is normal. Do a forum search for "bobbins".

Side to side movement is O.K. Forward to back movement is the one to suggest replacement. A teeny bit is normal. Forgive the technical term. Can't remember the exact measurement. Smile

If it's got original blackened aluminium bobbins changing them for either of the aftermarket steel ones will probably bring them back to only just floating... Mine were rattling until I changed the bobbins.

I never really realized how much float those rotors can have.

Just went for a ride today with no helmet Shocked or earplugs, and it's amazing the new/different sounds of the bike that you can hear. Like the rotors, and other assorted sounds.
