|
The other day, my friend Pravin and I were discussing a ride to Thailand, but instead of using the highway (green line), we'd be using only the 'old road' (grey line)...the highway would get us to the border in 5 hours with stops, and it's quite a boring ride...so from Kuala Lumpur, we headed north-east, (the blue dots in the middle of the map) toward Bentong, Raub, Kuala Lipis, Pulai, Gua Musang, Dabong and Jeli.
Jeli is already pretty much the tip of the country before Thailand starts, but we decided to be adventurous and hit the infamous east-west highway that cuts across the Titiwangsa mountain range to Gerik and Baling....somewhere before Jeli, we were bombing along, beautiful road, no other traffic (everyone uses the main highway these days), dead straight, we crest a hill doing about 130kmh, and this was waiting for us just over the crest...
Pravin getting a worm's eye of the invisible pothole! It can't be seen coming up the incline...
There was really no time to stop, no place to manuver to, because this thing took up the WHOLE road. Pravin's KTM 990 Adventure hit first and all I saw was a huge wave of muddy water go up. I thought that's it, no way I'd make it thru cos his bike is like a big Paris-Dakar off-roader, my K, isn't!! Glad to say, it was a big hole but not that deep...deep enough to bottom out the bike and break 2 of my fairing mounts, but not big enuff to spit me off.
The rest of the ride across the mountains was brilliant though....

Post pothole mayhem...can't tell but the bike is covered in muck!
The fairing damage, dammit! (now fixed already)
So anyway, it took us 10 hours instead of 5 to get where we were going, twice the time exactly, but seriously - pothole from hell and all - three times the fun!

Hello!
You were lucky not hurting yourself on that hole! I know some situations, where oil pan or swing arm was damaged, not mentioning wheel rims.
I am not surprised by such "attraction" it is quite common thing on Polnad's roads, in the cities too :/.
Lately I was travelling on north Czech roads (south of Sudety Mountains). Curves lovely, road surface OK, just incoming traffic cutting corners was a bit PITA.
http://gpsed.com/track/4511417239336525353 a track on the map. We went for Czech Tourist Trophy racing near Ostrava
Photos, especially for vintage race bike class.
Next weekend I did north side of Sudety - Polish side. Sic, in some parts whole road looks like the one on pictures :/.

I like my K, but I am thinking about switching to GS when I look on roads quality :/

LoL - now THAT is a pothole! Glad to see you came through somewhat unscathed Thanks for posting the ride report, I am a huge fan of them especially with places I have never been to. _________________

THANKS Ted! Appreciate that
Well, 'somewhat unscathed' is right, I did bust up my fairing again, in fact the same area as my much earlier posting where I bottomed out the bike on a kerb...my 'Doh' moment
So anyway waddya think? I had the lower fairing off to DIY repair the busted up area, and got to thinking that the bike looks pretty good with the lower fairing off! I can see the engine now, and there's a lovely 'BMW' stamp on the right side which is always hidden from view...Am actually contemplating keeping it off permanently...might even help with the engine cooling
Regards,

Chris, have you considered fiberglass reinforced body filler like this?

There is a plate that fits over the spark plug area of a K1100LT.
The part number is 1-11-21-461-409
Just put a 6mm-1.0 pitch tap throught the lugs provided.
I take it off when bottom goes on for trips away.Only time it does go on. _________________ Yamaha TX650A
