| Alright help me out guys, i just join your site, alot of great info. Rode bike over 40+ years mostly Harley, I recently picked up a 87 k100 lt w/13k miles, I'm impress on how this bike handles, but the buzzies are killing me Has anyone researched, heard off, know someone, dreamed of re gearing the driveline so you can tack 3k rpm while doing 70 mph, if not I forced to sell her. I'm awaiting back surgery and the buzzies kill my back after 1 hour riding, I know it would affect power band across the board but I don't need to do 0-80 mph just blinking my eyes. I used to the put putt of a Harley but there has to be a happy medium. Help me out guys or just admit me to funny farm |

If you get it properly tuned it shouldn't be buzzy. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

You need to sycnh the throttle bodies and make sure you don't have any air leaks:
1) Crank case breather hose
2) Boots between the TBs and the cylinder head
3) Boots between the intake plenum and the TBs
1 and 2 are common failure points.
You can also add bar ends but getting the bike running properly is the key to getting rid of buzziness.
Some people have changed the gearing on 4V Ks but I've never heard of anyone doing it on a 2V K - especially changing it by 40% like you seem to be suggesting.
Are you riding on a stock seat? Those are AWFUL.

Also, don't forget to go around the bike with the BMW manual's torque settings and a good torque wrench and re-torque all the bolts you can find. Loose bolts are a major source of vibration, believe it or not the exhaust header bolts are a major culprit. After 10+ years it is a good idea to give them all a good check. _________________

Grip Puppies may help too. I put a pair on my K1100RS last month...helps with hand fatigue. _________________

If you don't have heated grips fitted (the BMW ones) you could pump the bars full of silicon sealer to absorb some of the vibes (old MX bike trick), and fit super heavy bar end weights. If you have the BMW heated grips, you can still do this, but it's a bit of a faff, and you must be careful with those old and getting brittle wires. Sheepskin on the seat an Airhawk pad, or a different seat from standard will also help.
But like Duck says, get the engine serviced and balanced, it should make the world of difference.

I've heard that filling the bars with lead shot is also very effective.
Another option would be to swap in some K1100LT handlebars as those have weighted bar ends. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

I have two things to add to this.
When looking at the Throttle bodies, spray WD40 around the cylinder head to inlet stub joint when running. Any change in running will indicate that the inlet stub 'O' ring needs changing. If fact I think I would change them anyway as they are cheap. While you're at it check vacuum take-off caps for perishing.
Also, some years ago, a local BMW mech told me that the frame can act like a tuning fork if not shimmed.
Sounds weird but true. And this works if the frame is stressed when tightened.
With the bike on the centre stand, loosen the three rear engine mounting bolts (the front two bolts are rubber mounted and don't matter).
This should tell you if the frame is stressed as a gap will be found between the frame and gearbox.
Shim all three bolts out so that the frame isn't stressed when tightened.
I had a K100LT years ago which vibrated quite badly. I found the frame had a 0.0020" gap between the frame and gearbox.
So much better after shimming.
It's another thing to try as it's cheap to do and takes 30 mins tops. _________________ K1100LTIC |

I haven't read past the OP. Sorry, no time.
Another source is the kick stand / center stand.
It's the major buzz maker on mine and whenever the heck I have time, I'll address it. _________________ 1993 K1100RS aka The Shop Whore

All of the above advice is sound and solid, even tappets might be an issue.
The bike can be quietened down regarding the buzz
Sounds like your back is the big issue though.... i mean morphine is serious stuff for serious pain.
What I have been doing for the last few years now is to work on strengtening the muscles in my back so that they are strong, especially lower back muscles and abdominal... 'core' muscles.
Kidney belts often help folks too by rigidifying the flexible lower back but it's really a lifestyle thing of strengthening and building up the muscles which hold the whole show in place .
I am sure you know all this anyways as a bad back takes a while to get there but it is just a thought I had for you
All the very best mate and you have done your back a favour by moving off the Hardly
If you persevere with your back strength and the bike fixes, you could be a winner here |
