Not until I sort out some significant storage issues with the SO! There's a '95 up the road in Alamagordo for $4900 with around 30K on it but I passed, given what I now have--which passed inspection and is now titled and registered.

RANT: But I'm tired of local entities fixing some artificial value in order to maximize their sales tax: the agent in Chelan wanted to set the sales price on the '93 at $7000, but relented when I could show her the Kelly value. Here in El Paso, I paid sales tax on $4400; otherwise, my only recourse was to get a professional appraisal (that had to cost at least $100) to get the value reduced. Such is the price of doing business.

what? don't they have to only charge you sales tax on what you paid? in which case you should only have to present the title with the price paid printed on it. if the title does not have space for that (or that info is not on there) you need to have a bill of sale signed by both parties with the price listed. now, in terms of personal property tax, yeah that is where you can get screwed if not careful. i believe kansas uses the NADA value.

Not the way it works in Texas. They used to honor the sales price on the BOS, but then they realized that the numbers on BOS could be a figment of the imagination agreed upon by buyer and seller, and that was costing them sales tax revenue. So now they tell you what the value on a used vehicle is for sales tax purposes and you can contest it only with an appraiser's report that must have cost you at least $100. That might be worth it on a high-value used car, but the extra tax I paid was close to but not over $100. So I ate it.

And I really think I'm going to take a beating on the '96 parts bike if I transfer the title at this point. That's supposed to be done in Texas within 30 days of the transaction; if I do that, I'll have to pay sales tax on the book value of the bike, not the bike in its current condition.

I'm still sorting out some title issues on this bike, but I'm hoping that I will have an undated title with release and an undated BOS that I can sit on until I know whether the bike is restorable and thus of some value or whether I'll just part it out. From all that I--as the farthest thing from an expert wrench--can tell, it's restorable, but whether that's true and whether I can do it are questions yet to be answered.

But it's still fun...

I wish you'd told me before you registered that bike in WA. They stopped honoring BOS's quite a while ago. The vehicle "values" they have in Olympia are a f'n joke. I literally burst out laughing when they wanted to tax me on $5k for a wrecked K75S that I picked up off of CL for a grand.

They will, as you found out, honor the online KBB dealer price but what you really need to do in WA is complete a Declaration of Buyer and Seller Regarding Value of Used Vehicle Sold form that is signed by both the buyer and seller. That way you only have to pay taxes on what you actually paid.

Here's the form: http://dor.wa.gov/Docs/Forms/Misc/DeclarBuyerSllrRcValueUsedVehSold_E.pdf

I learned about that because the licensing agency I use here in Seattle is very helpful and knowledgeable and told me about when I purchased a bike that came with an extra frame. Without it, in order to tranfer title on that frame, I would've had to pay a boatload in taxes but instead paid the minimum which is tax on $250.

Not many people know about it and I always see people going into shock at the licensing offices when they're assessed tax on the state's inflated values as opposed to what they actually paid.

<Insert Tea Party tax and spend rant here.>

The person in the Chelan office was not difficult to work with: when I brought in the KBB print-out (after having to drive back to Orando to get it) she accepted the BOS because what I paid was within Washington's allowable limits for their book value. So I came out okay up there: nice people.

Texas is another matter in this as in all things.

In my old age, I'm fascinated by the ways--the innumerable ways--in which organizations increase their cash flow while minimizing their own services. Probably that was happening in Babylonia 5 millenia ago... Cool

Buy a new bike... Taxed. Sell the bike... Taxed. To the recycle yard it goes... Taxed for every f in part that comes off it. Where do I sign up for that business plan... IRS... What a gig! Rolling Eyes
