A few firearms and a little cash later, I rode home on a decent 1985 K100 with 55K on the odo. I've always wanted to get a K bike to bare naked status with clip on handlebars, minimalist headlight and stripped of all non-essentials. Has anyone done a similar project? Photos? Challenges? Your experiences can be helpful.

My plans include newer forks from the K11 series, retaining the upgraded Brembos and retro fitting a 17" or 18" wide rim for radials front and rear.
Ohlins for the rear (I have one being rebuilt by Penske), a smaller headlight, an aftermarket tach, eliminating the evil MotoMeter gauges completely. I have a couple of Police solo saddles, OEM, and want to adapt one with a revised hand formed tail section and LED tail/brake lights. No battery covers. Bar ends. SuperTrapp exhaust. etc. I believe this bike has the hotter cams, but, I will pull those and see.

There's a totally stripped cafe racer K100 I see occasionally up the mountain here. It looks great. It's not immaculate ie it gets used a lot!

Round accessory headlight on chrome brackets, bugger all wiring that I could see except the essential stuff, airbox was gone replaced with paper filters, I am sure it lost about 100kgs!

If I see it again I'll take photos.

Hi Freedom,

I've been playing with Kays for the past 6 years or so - Cafe Racers and specials [ all makes ] for the past 50 years !

I have 3 Kay projects on the go at the moment - A 60's [Brit ] style Cafe Racer which has wire wheels [ R1150GS] and K1100 forks / brakes and all the normal 60's styling cues - including specially made Gold Star silencer!

Clip ons are a bit of a headache due to BMW's odd choice of fork stanchion which is neither 41mm or 42mm! [ 41.7mm]

The second is a Modern Race Rep style with Yam R6 [ '09] fairing - and the 3rd is my Streetfighter. The Fighter is actually the Mk3 version and is shown here still in mock up. It will be pulled down for paint [ Satin Black with either Acid Green or FO Orange] and detailing this Winter.

Subsequently I've fitted 5" five spoke rear from K1200S and I'm in the process of having the K1200S wheel spindle altered to fit the K1100 forks.

I've also had a new underseat exhaust made up here in the UK [ Keihan ].

I have a 5.5" rear wheel sitting in my garage [ R1100S] and I've just acquired the relevant wheel mounted disc and caliper / bracket. However, I'll probably keep that one for the Race Rep.

Where does the time go ???? The Fighter at least should have been completed this year - oh I remember, I got diverted designing and making a Reverse Trike [ Kay of course !]

I hope to have the forks and spindle back from the machine shop in a couple of weeks - was only going to be " 2 weeks guv" - that was 8 weeks ago !

Not sure about your home market, but here in the UK tatty / unloved Kays can be bought for £100 - £500 - that's what brought me to them in the first place as all my projects have to be self funding [ good old E-Bay ].

They make an excellent base for a special and end up being "Norranothafugginbandit".

BTW - here's the pile of bits that will one day [ soon ] become a 60's style Cafe Racer.

Some parts will NEVER look right ................

Disc brakes - I'm keeping them as self preservation set in at 65.
Tank - AJS 7R fake tank to cover the original, or maybe 5 gall Manx.
Radiator - hide behind engine at an angle where battery used to live.
