Can anyone help me with some parts information. This week my 93 K1100RS failed at the front drive universal. The driving yoke broke. 105000 klm so I wasn't expecting it yet. Luckily at low speed and close to workshop. Does anyone know of a good place in tne USA to buy a new driveshsft assembly. The quote here in Aus is $1100 ( about 950 USD)and on back order.
Thanks

Did you try Munich Motorcycles? Depending on the damage, you might be able to just replace the U-joint, or buy a rebuilt shaft.

Thanks Drikko & Robleyd
Tried munich, they only have a new one available on backorder, will give the BM shop a try. My drive shaft is pretty sad. The yoke forks are severly beaten so no go on just replacing the uni.

Gary - seems like that's happened to a number of the '93's - you're not alone... _________________ Jim

It's not limited to 93s. It's happened to newer and older bikes as well. And it can happen to either U-joint.
Makes one wonder if the drive shaft phasing thing might not be a contributing factor.
Just guessing but the 24k bike I'm about to take apart probably never had a drive shaft/spline lube and most likely is how the factory put it together. It will be interesting to see how that drive shaft is phased. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

I'll be curious to see what your findings are. (as a member of the failed drive shaft club, which seems to be growing..) _________________ Steve

Good morning all...
Say... while we're talking "drive shafts"... what are the symptoms of 'drive shaft phasing' ??? Resonant vibration ??
Regards all, and Good Luck Gary C.

Got he old girl back together this week, going good as ever. A couple of observations on the job that might help others.
The motobins price for the driveshaft was unbeatable , about 600AUD delivered Britian to Oz.
The shaft was not identical, the forward shoulder on the rear universal was not machined in the radius as was the origional. On initial assembly the drive locked when the uni came up to the post in the swing arm that restricts the forward travel of the aft uni. Fix is to machine the uni or grind a bit more clearance on the post. It hughly increases the cost of beer on the job when you and mates have to work it out first time.
Also replaced the input shaft oil seal on the final drive, Had to manufacture a holding fixture and a tube spanner for the oil seal gland nut ' anouther big jump in beer consumption". The factory service manual is great, covers every step accurately and in detail , text and drawings.
Thanks again to everyone for their advice, off to Cairns monday for a test run.

Forgot to say, definately phased the universal joints to each other. Over a few ales the mates and I ( retired ships captain, power station operator, aircfaft engineer) discussed the zen of joints and found the truth at the bottom of the bottle. Crazy not to do it.
