I was checking my final drive for play, as I do periodically. This time I also measured the drive line backlash (forward and backward rotational play) at the rear wheel. I did this by the incredibly precise technique of placing a short piece of 2x2 on the floor and compared the travel of a small rib on the tire side wall just above the tread.
I came up with about 2 inches.
I found nothing in the Clymer nor in the BMW Shop Manual. Searching this site I found this thread, which states that 1 inch is the "Normal new" amount.

My bike is a 97 K11LT with 72K miles on it.
Am I still in the acceptable range? Or is it time to worry?
Thanks
