Don't know if anyone has seen this youtube piece yet.

The price is probably way up there. Maintenance might be $$$.
But if you wanted to do a long/fast tour- especially 2-up, this looks like the ticket Now where is that lottery ticket? _________________ John & Cathy

Looks really boring to me, and if my mates experience with a new F800 is correct then BMW will see you coming for service and rip you raw......he tried to change the headlight bulb, one of the spring retainers broke off as it's cheap plastic.....$700 later for a new headlight, he's going to get rid of it, a bad experience and he's been riding BMs for 30 years. Won't have another new one now. _________________ K1100RS '97

Just NO SOUL.
Many would probably find a Goldwing boring also- but that doesn't keep LOTS of folks from buying them and racking up some serious distances. _________________ John & Cathy

Looking at all our comments about the new I-6, I wonder how many similar statements were made by Airhead owners when they read about or saw their first K100 back in the early 80's.
Probably something like- "that's not a BMW", "too complicated" or even "how much $$ will maintenance be on THAT?" _________________ John & Cathy

That's basically what I thought, even before I read your post, John: "doesn't look much like a BMW"...
But I think it looks well balanced, specially without the top-case. I like the metallic sound of the engine, sorry. Must be easy to drive, confortable, fully equiped with those "angel-eyes" headlights, engenius GPS mount, etc., all the gadgets of modern motorcycles. A great tourer... but too much luxury for my wallet and a bit "insipid".
As for maintenance, well, it won't come cheap. While I can take my K to a friend's garage and solve most things there, modern BMWs force us to visit official shops even to turn off a simple mantenance warning light. Plus, some nowadays BMs are said to have reliability problems... I don't know.
Here's one more video in the same scenery. Reminded me a bit of Majorca, in the Balearic Islands (Spain). Does anybody know where this was recorded?

I'm with Karlos - it sounds really nice to me. Looks nice too. Just wish they didn't have all the electronics but I suppose there's no way to get away from all that anymore, at least with a new BMW. Mmm - that sound is so sweet though. Fortunately I love the whine of a K-bike also..... _________________ 2012 R1200RT Midnight Blue

I already have an answer. And the winner is... Portugal!
Yes, these videos were filmed here. A fellow portuguese K owner told me - kudos to him. The sceneries unveiled:
- 'Guincho' (located on Estoril coast)
- 'Serra da Estrela' (highest mountain range in continental Portugal)
- 'Serra de Sintra' (near Sintra, a popular tourist destination)
Furthermore, I found the photos taken before the presentation of the bike at INTERMOT Cologne, Germany. In this one you can see the 'Vasco da Gama' bridge, which I cross everyday to go to work. Unbelievable!
Here's the link to the generous gallery. Enjoy!

I watched both the vids, and looked at all the pix - thanks for the link, Karlos. I haven't seen a BMW I like since the 1100LT or RS.
By the time I got done looking at all the pix (while I should have been working), I was actually liking the GTL.
Of course, I'd have to wait 15 years to get one - when they're more affordable. By that time, I'm not sure I'll be riding. Guess it's a moot point. I wonder if these bikes with all the electronics will even be running then. bet it costs a friggin' fortune to fix them! _________________ Jim

Not sure, Jim... Seems that «2012», the movie, was so bad that even the gods will review that profecy!
«2012» was recently considered the most absurd science-fiction film ever, for scientific and movie-making reasons. That's the opinion of NASA scientists. They say that it's an "exceptional and extraordinary" example of Hollywood bad science.
But that's another story... _________________ Carlos

That's the reason you sold it?
After what was said in this topic about the K1600, I also think the GTR is a great modern motorcycle. Never rode one, though. The only thing I find a really odd is that bulky exhaust. Seems that it came from and to the wrong bike... _________________ Carlos

Since I started this thread I guess I can hijack it
Karlos,
There are several reasons why I never quite warmed up to the GTR.
The positives are that it is VERY FAST and that is in completely stock condition. A couple of relatively easy mods make it a rocketship. And with an aftermarket (larger) windshield raised to the highest position there is very little wind noise.
But it is a bike that I never got comfortable on. I had a Sargent seat and moved the footpegs back to the rear position- the handlebars always felt too high for me. While many GTR owners put on bar risers (on the GTR the "bars" are two individual assemblies that bolt to the top clamp) to lessen the reach to the grips, I felt that I wanted them further away and lower- I have REALLY long arms.
It is also a very heavy bike that eats tires. The OEM rubber lasted 4400 miles before the front was down to the wear bars, the rear was not far behind. The Michelin PR2 tires that replaced them had 6000 miles on them at trade-in and would have been good for maybe another 1500. And on a few occasions it nearly fell over on me at walking speed (I have LONG legs too, so I am good at keeping bikes upright) and the possibility of extensive, expensive damage to all that pretty thin plastic was very likely.
When I mention "the lack of soul/feel", the greatest was a kind of rubbery feel through the handlebars. Having come from a K1100RS that I had done the "how to make K11 handlebars almost rigid" mod on, the GTR was very disappointing that way.
(Also it was very difficult to hold a steady speed on the highway, even after I installed a "throttle tamer", but that was more of an annoyance)
After that and once I did a test ride on the K100RS, I realized how well the RS fits me and it does not feel so big.
Perhaps someone coming from an LT would not have the same impressions.
There are a bunch of smaller reasons why I switched back, but that's the short version of my K to GTR to K odyssey.
Now if it would just stop snowing......... _________________ John & Cathy

Nice video, nice bike. I'd like to see one in black paint. Can't wait to see how it compares to the Gold Wing. _________________ 2000 R1100RT
