Hi all,
I am a noobie. Just bought my K1100RS (1993) just before Christmas.
And I love it. Best bike I have ever ridden, and that includes a Goldwing and a Honda PC800 (plus others).
Anyway the bike has one mechanical problem. the speedometer keeps dropping out. Going along at say 100kph, check the speed again and it is on 0. And the mileage isn't increasing. Could stay this way for a long time, then suddenly notice it is back on again, maybe not for long.
Anyone had this problem, or know how to fix it (even if that means buying a new part).
Also, on the long ride home from where I bought it, after quite a long time of riding (2hours plus), I noticed the gear indication was wrong. I was in 5 and it showed 4. As time went on it got progressively worse, till in top gear and it might be showing 1 or 2.
Again any clues? What might I need to do to fix this problem. (Less important than the speedo one, but might be related, hence asking in the same post.
Anyway, thanks for reading this far.
Regards
Dave |

Hi Dave,
Welcome to K11OG!
The gear indicator can go wonky when it gets wet - you riding in the rain? Or washed the bike recently? As soon as it dries out, it'll start working again. The indicator switch can be replaced, but not easily. _________________ Jim

Step 1: Remove the left side battery cover and check that all connectors are firmly plugged in. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

WELCOME!
If you are anywhere near to Auckland, look up Paul Edlington (he is a poster here on the K11OG). And he is a really nice guy.
pauledlington@xtra.co.nz
He might be able to help you out if you get stumped.
Good luck.

Thanks for the tips so far.
Re gear selection indicator. Yes the bikee was wet. Had to stop overnight on my trip home, and the bike was out in the rain all night, then raining in the morning and raining again near to my destination.
So I will bear that in mind if it happens again.
Re speedo. I have pulled out the large connector above the batterty, brushed as well as I could the contacts, and put the connector back in (in and out several times to ensure as clean a connection as I can.
Will be a while before I get out on the bike again to check out the speedo.
Am 400 miles from Auckland, but I might get through there with the bike in the near future, so will bear his name in mind.
Thanks and regards
Dave
