Some time ago, I asked about the persistant red caution light, and it was suggested that the brake light might be corroded. The brake light works just fine, but only when the front brake lever is used - the rear brake pedal doesn't light it.

Also, I'm getting intermittant activity in the forward turn signals - on occasion, I get a soft and steady amber glow, and the signal works just fine. Other times, I get no glow (absence of "running light" effect) while the signal works just fine, still. I'm curious what the proper state of affairs is - should I expect a running light in the forward turn signals, or is that the abnormal state?

And any ideas how to fix the brake light/rear pedal/constant caution light, since the bulb itself is working just fine?

I would be most grateful for any useful information, as I'm in need of a safety inspection, and these things will fail me here in VA.

Oh, and for some reason, I can't get my fog lights working without blowing every fuse it sees. Simple circuit, boom boom boom. Can't figure it out.

The "triangle light" tests four things:

1) The front brake switch

2) The rear brake switch

3) The brake light bulb

4) the tail light bulb

It should go out once you've started the bike and hit both brakes. (Not necessarily at the same time.)

In your case it sounds as though your rear brake switch is kaputski.

Freaky turn signals (and other strange electrical gremlins) are often caused by a dirty starter. Take the starter apart and clean it out.

For the fog lights: Once you've cleaned the starter if it's still happening then trace the wiring and look for a short.

When you say "starter", do you mean the starter motor for the engine? Or the starter switch in the handlebar?

Starter motor. Left side. Hiding behind the coils. You need to remove the battery to get to it. Remove the two bolts holding it to the transmission. Wiggle hard on it. They're usually a little stubborn coming out.

To put it back in, put it in place, put a small block of wood on the rear of it and tap the block of wood moderately hard with a hammer to get it reseated. (Or use a rubber mallet.)

I'm not doubting you, but this almost sounds like a bad joke setup.

Like old british cars.

"when I turn on the stereo, the wipers come on."

"must be the headlights, then."

Very Happy

Christopher has a touch of black English humour;

FD is not joking though... Wink

This quirk is well known in that there is an earth pathway that runs through the starter brushes, or at one of them, connected to your load shedding relay....

Ignition on, blinkers on, in gear and rock the machine back and forth a little... might elicit a slight response as it tickles your starter brushes...

The Germans DO have a sense of humour Wink

All the best and glad you are on the mend with your back Very Happy

Well that makes some sense, now, understanding the nature of it.

I was out looking for Alan Funt, just to make sure.

Looks like I need to plan a Saturday for this thing, then. I suppose it wouldn't hurt to check all the bulbs anyway.

"The war" is very relevant to BMW motorcycles. But it's WWI, not WWII. BMW originally built airplane engines. However, after WWI at Versailles Germany agreed to stop producing aircraft engines so in the early 20s they switched to building motorcycles and in the 30s automobiles.

Without The Treaty of Versailles we'd all be riding Ducatis or Triumphs. Laughing
