|
|
Good morning all...
Just finished watching Discovery Channel "Sturgis" etc... I hate to be negative, BUT what the heck does Sturgis have to do with motorcycles ?? Especially numbing to the senses was the "tire burn out" event... I cannot imagine what that is all about or why anyone would want to destroy an expensive, and apparently new, bike tire ??? One fellow on a brand new HD V-Rod completely destroyed his engine in the process of destroying his tire as well.. Help me, need some enlightenment here ! What is this all about ???...or is it just me ??
Best regards all, Spring IS coming !!.........// Ernie in NH _________________ AMA,, American Deaf Bikers

I'm with you, Ernie. I would never go near Sturgis while the event is in session. I don't like crowds, loud bikes, and drunks - I think that's what Sturgis is about. _________________ Jim

For the most part, it's straight out of the brain stem, via tribalism; as demonstrated with these guys. But, along with burning rear tires, they burn a bit of their hair ....

Ernie,
These events seem to do a detour from the original intent- I'll bet that some of those attending "Bike Week" here in New Hampshire don't even know that there are races at NHIS. _________________ John & Cathy

I've been to Sturgis during bike week. My uncle's memorial service was right out of Rapid City and took place during bike week in 2005 so I figured what the heck and took my LT. It's an interesting spectacle.
The strange part was that they had signs by the side of the road saying "Do not ride in the center of the road." I didn't understand what that meant - until I saw guys on HDs riding down the dashed stripe on the center of a 2 lane road. Go figger.
Bars are packed with people drinking before they ride away. Crazy.
There's some great riding around there though. During the rally I found it was best to get up at 6am and go riding before everyone else woke up.
This picture was taken in dowtown Custer. Which one doesn't belong?

Hi guys....
I have been all through that area of the country ( Sturgis, Spearfish, Deadwood etc.. and on up to Glacier.. and it is truly great riding. Plus I met a lot of friendly ordinary people everywhere which makes it even better. However the madness that comes into Sturgis in August with the 500k or so so-called motorcyclists is beyond me to fathom. Same is true here in the Laconia area I guess ...ie: John's comment "What races ???"
RE Duck's pic: That antenna really stands out doesn't it ?
Thank heavens "the few, the sane, the dedicated" ( ie: the good the bad, the ugly ) can be found right here at K11OG !! IF anyone ever figures out the 'tire burn' I'd love to know.. or maybe this is something we should try at HMSP-IV ?? PS3 more smoke than Avon ???
Thanks all... see you later .....// Ernie in NH _________________ AMA,, American Deaf Bikers

Burnout: Put the front wheel up against a solid wall (or just hold the front brake tightly), stand on the ground above the seat, rev the bejeesus out of it and drop the clutch in first gear.
K75 burnout:

If a K75 can do a burnout then a K1100 sure can. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

I think it's just a "lifestyle" thing at Sturgis.
Buffalo Chip certainly books some great "for me" musical events. _________________ '93 K1100LT

I went to Sturgis once. I had a great time. In fact, it was much more fun than any BMW rally I've attended. The best part was riding the canyons, visiting Deadwood and hanging at the Buffalo Chip at night. My only nit was the crowds. If I ever return I'll go the week before the rally starts. _________________ 2000 R1100RT

The other 'kicker' to this story is how 'they' get there.
Most HD posers I've talked to say they are going but then admit they will be trailering their rides there.
I will note that most of the bikes I do see while I ride the western US are HDs. _________________ Mike Gullery

Same here in the New England states. And 10 to 20x that during Laconia Bike Week and the week before. _________________ John & Cathy

Hey guys...
Dont get me wrong.. have "nuthin" against HD or HD riders, or nothing even against Sturgis/Laconia/Daytona or those that attend. To each his own : Live and let live ! It is simply that inane ( brain dead ) activity referred to as the "burn out" that baffles me. Why destroy your machine or any of its components intentionally and then delight in it ?? Is that what 'motorcycling' is all about ?? I think not....

Sturgis is about the art of the spectacle...i bartended and attended this party for a few years. It is a fun time, but difficult to find sleep. Interestingly, the guys in biker 'costumes' that really seemed to be serious were BMW riders..and from Deustchland.
Thats why you go to Sturgis, to meet/see lots folks and many bikes. The entertainment varies from big country/rock and roll acts to...a topless rodeo in Hulett and everything in between. The riding in the Black Hills is spectacular, a GS rider can find lotsa off road stuff too. Many bikers trailer cause sleeping and living with what you can haul, for a week can get 'rough'.
Go once, for a couple days...any riders going this year? _________________ 1997 K1100LT-SE

Geoff,
I like the "week before" idea. You could get a lot of nice riding in and all of the bars would be fully stocked with brew in preparation for the upcoming rally. Might just do that this year. _________________ Eric Johnson

Might go. My step-aunt lives in Custer and likes to have me visit so finding a place to sleep is a breeze for me. _________________ 93 LT (x2)
