Hi all,
As the second owner of my '92 K100RS and after fifteen thousand miles I decided it was time to see what the grease on the splines looked like, knowing the first owner didn't touch the splines having only put 5,000 on the bike. So with twenty thousand miles and nearly twenty year old grease it was time to dig in.

Now that I'm in the middle of lubing all the splines, with everything disassembled I'm also going to clean everything, as well as a long list of other basic maintenance and a few electrical additions.

My garage space doesn't have access for much water for rinsing after using cleaners. What product or method have you found works best to get the grime and crud out of the bellhousing plus other nooks and crannies without having to do a final rinse?

So far all my tech questions have been answered with the search function. What a compendium of information we have here, thanks to all the contributors!

Cheers,
Rand

Brake cleaner will do a good job on the metal parts and clutch plate. Elbow grease for the rest.

+1 on the brake cleaner. I try and get a few cans when it goes on sale.

Nice clean clutch assembly and housing there, FD Very Happy

I was at the parts store and found a can of elbow grease, it was on sale, next to the rack of muffler bearings and left handed metric crescent wrenches. Laughing

After posting this as I was driving home it occurred to me to use waterless handcleaner on the grime. Brake cleaner for the metal parts without a doubt.

Love me some MEK, toluene, and xylene.

That block of wood is what I use to keep the clutch basket from turning when I'm torquing the clutch nut. It's one of BMW's earliest "special tools" and the part number for it is 00 00 0 000 007.

Don't forget to wear goggles with brake cleaner, it's designed to come out of that can with force inevitably leading to splashing - and it burns, my god it burns. Not that I would know ofc having never been so stupid as to get it in my eyes but it really does burn
