Like Steve was finding, all I have noticed around here retail is either clear/white or black/grey adhesive.
Chances are the black adhesive is a special order for a special mfgr?

3M inter lock

Postby jpberens1994K1100RS » Thu Apr 29, 2010 1:21 pm

Ok, I'll dish.

I e-mailed 3M. They have a product sample page. I stated I was looking to attach some signage that would need regular updating so I'd need something strong to hold the sign, but be able to remove & reattach to update and that I really liked the inetr-loc feartures.

Few more e-mails back & forth, presto, I got a box in the mail with samples. Not all have the black backing, but one package did. Had maybe a dozen samples of 4 different kinds. Black back, clear back & white back.

Went through them pretty quick playing around or I'd offer to send you some.

That's mty story / scam. It worked & they was free.

That chit is expensive to buy.

Ebay has some and you can make your own circles. This is what I use for a lot of applications.

3M inter lock

That's a good deal!

Youreally do not need to make dots.

I use just 2 pieces each side at 2" long. And the one under the head light.

Holds on just fine.

I don't know how much it matters, but if you look close. The top and bottom dual locks are different from Aeroflow. One of them has more teeth than the other, on purpose. When I added the sheild to my new bike, I called them to get more, and I had to buy a whole kit, like $20 if I remember. Luckily the bike is white, so it blends a little better. But my red does not look nice.

The Dual lock comes in 3 different sizes one is 400, one I think 250 and the other is like 170. the numbers correspond to the number of little mushrooms per sq.inch. The more mushroooms you have the stronger it is. The 400 is also suppose to be able to link up with the 250 and 170.

Hey Rich, on that Ebay link, I can't see where it references the back as being black, do you know something I'm not seeing?

I can find black all over the place, just not black with a black backing.

I plan use the 400 type. The clear I used was listed for "marine applications" and was the clear 400 type. I thought the clear would turn red when applied, but it mostly just looks white.

The dual lock I have is black plastic mushrooms and the adhesive is the heavy duty stuff that is clear. I would think the black of the dual lock would show through the clear adhesive.

Go here and you can see that the indoor/outdoor stuff has clear acrylic adhesive.

Thanks.

Wow, that's a lot of information. I had no idea they had so many types of adhesives and that they don't reccomaned 400 on 400 as it might too strong.

Maybe I should just stick with the dots I've ordered from Laminar Lip as they are specifically set up for this purpose and the grey backing doesn't look too bad.

Thanks for all the info Rich, my head is now spinning...

From the Ebay listing;
White. Although the dual lock is black, the adhesive backing is a white foam. I do have the clear listed. Mike

After doing some more research and reading of the specs for this stuff, I found the following.

The black with black adhesive has a rubber based adhesive that is "recomended for indoor use only". Scratch that.

The black with clear adhesive is only available on the "low profile" stuff. It's thinner and isn't as bulky when joined together. The problem with that is I need that 1/4" of thickness for a couple of reasons. One is at the bottom, under the chin, I need that 1/4" to clear the thickness of the brackets on my Catz lights. Secondlly at the top of the shield you have to use double thickness of Dual Lock to clear the movable wind spoiler and to compensate for the curvature of the bodywork sloping away from the shield. So scratch the low profile stuff.

So, it looks like I'm stuck with the 3/4" black dots with grey backing that I'm getting from Laminar Lip. Maybe I'll make up some 3/4" dots of electrical tape to cover the grey backing as seen from the front of the bike.

I'm pretty sure the black Aerostich stuff has the white foam backing as it has the red writing on the peel strip as referenced in the specs.

I never knew there was so much variance to the Dual Lock products.Image

Like John had mentioned, run the tape in a strip for the "race stripe" effect. Your kids will think it's cool that dad's bike has racing stripes.

Believe me- none taken. To each their own- I didn't like the dots.

Funny though how we each have our own tastes about what is good and what is not. For instance- when I was looking at RS replacements (and given the crap roads around here) I had actually thought of a BMW GS Adventure. But I cannot warm up to that stupid looking- in my opinion- beak above the front fender.

So I compromised and combined the ideas from everyone. I got some of the black Scotchlite reflective tape sheets (4ea. 3 3/4" x 9" sheets for $9.95 incl shipping) and punched out some 1" dots to cover the new grey backed duo locks from Laminar Lip.

So during the day they look like this:

Image

And at night when hit with lights they'll look like this:

Image

I actually got five sheets of the stuff, so it's more than enough to do the back side of my panniers as well. Win, win!

Does anyone have the standard Aeroflow screen? I'm about 5' 7" and this must be more than enough for me, but I can't seem to find many K11RS with the lowest height screen.

I'd like to see some photos. Thanks!

Regards to all!
