Norton is just about the worst POS corporate malware you can put on your computer. It's as bad as a virus. This is not an opinion, it is a fact.

I suggest Malwarebytes.

I've seen too many false positives with AVG. Malwarebytes is also free, and superior to AVG.

Google "best malware". AVG isn't listed. Malwarebytes shows up in almost everyone's top 5.

I've been using AGV for eons and it hardly ever gives me false positives. In fact I can't remember it ever doing that. The only nasty virus I ever got was my own fault for not paying attention when I downloaded some stuff from Limewire. I can't say if it's "the best" or not but it shows up in lots of articles naming the top free AV programs and has always worked well for me on numerous machines.

I ate your baby!

Virus control and removal is one of my specialties. I have infected myself on purpose a few times.

BTW Duck, I sent an email to Malwarebytes about your site. Haven't heard back yet. It is possible that your password for the site is not particularly secure. I find that is the most common mistake people make.

There are a lot of nasty people out there. Go figure.

The funny thing is that Bill Gates is the person who got me into computing in the first place. I went to the same school he did and was good in math. He was a few years ahead of me and I used to manually transcribe the old teletype tapes for his projects to make a few $$$ on the side when I was in 8th grade and I used to play chess with him and shit.

Everybody thought he was a complete nerd back when he was building his own PDP-11s (if you know what one of those is) and pretty much shunned him but he seems to have done quite well for himself. His best high school bud at the time was a guy named Kent Evans who died at very young age when he fell climbing Mt. Rainier. Bill and Kent devoted a large percentage of their time trying (successfully) to hack into Boeing's mainframe and both took great pride in doing so. So I do find some irony when Bill is dissing hackers and virus creators.

has anyone pondered why they are doing this.... have you see the quality of the Wrenchers lately... when you are charging a customer 88 to 150 USD an hour and still can't fix a simple light bulb... your profit margin starts to look like a down hill ski jump.
fix the problem not the blame ; fix what is messed up ; NO one is to blame.

Hhhmmm, interesting comments above. I worked for one of the biggest AV companies in the world until last Tuesday, I won't say which as it would get me instantly sued bigtime. A google search for "Best AV" results is NO indication of what is actually best. All that means is they have managed to milk the search engines best. That's not a hard thing to do.

I don't beleive for one minute the big corps are necessarily the best, but they do have technology that beats the free ones hands down.

However having said that I still run free AVG at home even though I can get free licenses from my recent employer. Reason is I have been running AVG for many many years and never been compromised. Only run the free one.

A false positive is better than not finding something bad. It's much easier to recover from.

BTW I also run both hardware and software firewalls. The former isn't necessary if you have the latter, we sell hardware firewalls so I can get free ones. Also run CCleaner (free) regularly and either Spybot (free) or Adaware (free) and you should be OK! It is increasingly difficult to get them free from their websites but if you follow the prompts you will.

So in summary you don't have to pay a single cent to be safe on the Internot. Just don't be dumb and beleive the emails that say to click on this link to update your information no matter WHO they are from. They are the enemy at the moment! DELETE THEM!
