Oh Gee, K11s!

I found the K11OG recently, signed up and now happily peruse the various posts. The K11 series may be the pinnacle, for me, of BMW motorcycle production (quality parts, ease of maintenance, durability, etc). I recently sold a K1200RS after 36K and a failure to bond with that fat and overweight machine, although, it had some marvelous virtues. The bulk of my miles on BMW (beginning with a brand new R60/5 eons ago) are on the K bikes starting with a 1985 K100RS.

With the proceeds from the K1200RS, I bought a K1100RS SE, black/silver that I found locally with a mere 6,230 miles on the odo. It joins a K1100K ("K" for Kombat) with 387K on it and a K75S. The Kombat was rehabbed from a wreck and rebuilt for endurance riding, complete with aux fuel and some ergonomic changes to allow long hours of saddletime.

Now, the new RS is undergoing the usual mods: synthetics, brake and coolant changes, upgraded headlight, throttle body synch, timing, frame shimming, the latter three items producing the needed reduction in vibration. But, it is a keeper and I look forward to the first long ride in a few weeks. Its getting hotter here in the Valley of the Sun and Colorado and beyond are beckoning.

Yeah but they screwed up by killing the K75 and not making a larger triple. Imagine a nice smooth 4V triple but with 90ish HP and a paralever.

K12 to K11

I also sold my 2004 K1200RS after only 6k miles. I also did not bond to it and like my K1100LT alot more. I also use the bike to pull a trailer which the K12RS was able to do but did not feel as capable as the K11LT.

A few things attract me far more to the K11 series vs the K12, the cable actuated clutch and the five speed tranny. It is fairly easy to carry a clutch cable as a spare and, with the K12, the slight difference between 5th and 6th gear was academic. Too, the long stroke of the K12 means higher piston speed. And, then there is the comparison of merely changing an air filter!

I suggestion of an upgrade K75 delights me, although, in current official BMWthink, I suspect it would turn out less than imagined.

I was thinking more of keeping it a classic K. Kind of like when they evolved the K100 to the K100RS4V and K1100.

If they'd gone the K1200 tupperware approach it would have the telefork front end though.
