Sun City, 2nd time lucky

Postby malcolmt » Mon Apr 05, 2010 8:27 am

We set off for Sun City, the forecast was plenty rain in the afternoon.
It didn't quite work out as planned. After 50km of the 160km it started raining steadily. We decided to turn around 50km from the resort when it was getting worse. We didnt fancy swelching around the place. The rain really came down on the way back, poured all the way home.

Gotta give it to the the wife, she didnt grumble once.
BTW..if you're looking for nice accomodation for the soccer world cup, I bet the spots in the last two pics can be hired at a good price.

Bugger, not good. You'd think somewhere called Sun City could organise the weather better!!

As for the soccer accom, thanks but no thanks, don't really like soccer....

Great pics BTW, You should post some pics of the squatters camps near joburg on the highway there. They blew me away when I was there! Gotta feel for those folk. We accidentally drove into one in Cape Town, a few tough looking guys brandishing machine guns waved us back the way we came...BPM!!

The forecast was "FacK to Bront".. Its harldy rained ince we got back.
Another anomoly with Sun City is the "Lost City".. every bugger and his dog knows where it is.

I couldn't give a damm about this world cup, after the latest murder I'll put money that even less will come.

Are you serious about being coaxed to leave a township ??
I've been in a few and never had hassles.

Sure am, the guy I was with was a local, keep in mind this was about 12 years ago, things were pretty tense then! Mark (the local) was as surprised as I was!! He was the guy I mentioned before from Stellenbosch. They were machine guns, not sure which type, guns aren't my specialty....

The weather gods were kind today and we did our trip to Sun City without any rain. Half way to Sun City is Hartebeesport Dam. Its dam popular with brekky runners. We stopped off for a coffee. Interestingly..Joburgs sewage is cleaned and pumped into the dam..then its used for Pretoria's water supply

Crossing the bottom end of the dam

After the dam are a number of Platinum mines, I've never come across any offcuts.

We got there without any hassles, 200km from home. We didnt know this but..on Sunday bikes get in for free, plus one hotel puts on a buffet brekky for bikers at $10 / head.

Now a few pic's from around the resort.

The brekky venue was good, one clube had around two doz members. There were a couple of nice bikes parked outside.

Yet another classic 1300cc Kwaka

A couple of decent trikes, not sure how tey are powered. They have a Drive/Neut/Rev switch on the tank.

Small driverless 'trains' ferry the punters from the resort to the parking. Having no driver means less chance of accidents
Image

Yep the bike is still in the parking

A goverment minister was spotted leaving the resort.

Almost back at the dam, the area is full of citrus farms.

15mins after we got home... the heavens opened. Our timing was superb.

Great photos Malcolm, reminds me of my fleeting visit there. Pretty sure that isn't a real lion BTW.

The patches on the bike groups jackets remind me of the old joke, How do you make a Maltese Cross? Kick him in the nuts.....

Keep up the good trip reports :)
