When I rode this home up the coast from Malibu, Russell let me keep the CA plate and title so I could ride it home legally. Then I mailed them back to him so he could deal with the administrative stuff. With no title or license I had to walk by this bike in the garage for a couple of weeks and not being able to ride it was KILLING ME.

Well, I got the title back on Saturday and got my WA title/license plate so it was time to dig in and get it set up for touring.

I think the following list is complete - but I did so much I may have forgotten something: Rolling Eyes

1 - Lite-Blazer LEDs: IMO, this is the best bang for your buck in terms of good rear LED flashing brake lighting.

2 - LED Tail Light Bulb: About as bright as stock but sparkles a little better and will never burn out.

3 - Hyperlights: Looted from the K11RS parts bike I bought on eBay.

4 - License Plate Frame: Gotta have a nice plate frame you know.

5 - Run-N-Lites: Looted from the parts RS.

6 - DGzRS Enamel Badge: Nice badge from the DGzRS, a German Coast Guard unit founded in the 1800s. Looks great on a red bike IMO. And it's in German to boot!

7 - Carbon Fiber Look Corbin Dual Sport: Picked this on ebay for $150 a while back. I’m not into ricing things up with carbon fiber but it's virtually brand new and looks pretty good on this bike. (I also have a backrest for it for the passenger.)

8 - Knee Pads: Gotta have these after getting used to them on the LT. Got these on ebay for $20 used but they're in great shape.

9 - Reynolds Rack with EMGO Topcase: Kept this when I sold the K100RS. IMO the best feature of the Reynolds Rack is that it's level so I've got a good spot to place my beer Beemered when working on the bike. I still have the Kato action figure for it too. (We'll call that #30 even though it's not in the picture.)

10 - K75 Reflectors: I like these better than the K11 ones. And they screw on so they won't fall off like the stick-on K11 reflectors.

11 - Ohlins Rear Shock: Picked this up on a $400 eBay Buy-It-Now several months back - thought it might come in handy some day. It has. Very Happy

12 - 4 Circuit Aux Fuse Block: Since I was adding many electrical farkles, this was a must and much better than having in-line fuses all over.

13 - Relocated ABS Switch: Needed the ABS switch slot in the dash for something else so I wired in a round momentary switch in the frame hole down by the seat latch. I never use the ABS switch but this will be handy if I ever need to do an ABS reset.

14 - Coil Coverplate: Gotta hide them ugly coils so I made this out of aluminum and painted it satin black.

(The black stuff on the ABS brain is a jpeg anomoly - it's nice and clean in real life.)

15 - Caliper-mounted Fog/Driving Lights: These are some Hella Optilux lights that are split in half - the outside is the fog light (installed some yellow Xenon bulbs in there for better daylight visibility to cagers) and the inside is a focused driving light. They have a sturdy metal casing and glass lenses. Got these on eBay for about $25. I thought they'd be ugly but rather like the clean looks of them.

16 - Headlight Relays with 90/100W Xenon Bulb: Installed some Western Duck (not Eastern Beaver) headlight relays and upgraded to a more powerful, brighter headlight bulb.

17 - Parking Light LED: Not very visible in this picture but I replaced the parking light bulb with an amber LED.

18 - Mirror Leashes: Looted a pair of stainless mirror leashes from the parts RS.

19 - Disabled Sidestand Switch: I hate that thing. Twisted Evil

20 - Audiovox CCS-100 Real Cruise Control: Best K bike mod there is. Very Happy

21 - LED Backlighting in the Instrument Cluster and Gauges: Red in the cluster with a green one for the clock since red doesn't illuminate the LCD very well. Green LEDs in the gauges.

22 - Powered GPS Mount: RAM Mount with switched power from the bike for my GPS.

23 - Switched Powerlet Socket in Dash: Looted the dash from the parts RS-SE. Will allow me to power my radar detector in the tankbag.

15 - Switch for Fog/Driving Lights: Looted the heated grip switch from the parts RS, swapped in an orange switch insert and wired it up to control the fog/driving lights which are also hooked into the high and low headlight beams.

24 - ProGrip 699 Gel Grips: Only $7.99 a pair and WAY better than stock.

25 - 12 Hour Clock: Much better than 24 hour time - at least for us dumb Americans.

26 - Kuryakyn LED Voltmeter: Buried it in the fairing so it's out of the way but easy to see while riding.

27 - Oil Sight Glass LED: It's so dark in the RS fairing that you need a flashlight to check the oil level - not anymore. Installed an amber LED mounted to one of the oil sump bolts. It's on whenever the bike is turned on.

28 - "The Cup": (No picture.) Plugged the hose from the engine and added "the cup" under the rear gas tank ports.

29 - Front Fender Extender: Looted from the parts RS. The red fender on this bike has some scratches so I swapped in the black one from the parts RS that had a fender extender on it.

30 - Replaced Left Fairing Lower: OK, this is more of a repair than a mod but luckily someone was selling this VGC Mystic Red left lower on IBMWR about the same time I bought the bike. (I also synched up the throttle bodies while I had the lower off. Bike's running smoother now of course. Very Happy )

Here's what the old one looked like after Russell's bike was knocked over:

My to do list: (a.k.a. stuff I can live with for now)

* Get the scratches on the mirrors repainted.

* Do something about the belly pan - this one has some scrapes and is hammered from rocks behind the front wheel.

* Get the rear half of the fender repainted.

* Swap in the upgraded forks from the K100RS that have beefier springs, adjustable preload and fork boots.

* Maybe swap in an aftermarket exhaust.

While I had my bikes out of the garage to sweep up I took this pic:

Duck,

Looks great!!! You may want to try a tank protector that sticks on between the gas cap and the top of the seat, it will help a little with the heat issue as far as brushing up against the tank. Best of luck with it :>)

G'day Duck

Looking good. Very Happy

Where do you find the time to do all these mods?

Where did you get the light for checking the oil level. Its a good idea and will make life easier.

Keep up with the good work. Beemered

Great work as usual Drake, I await your ride report, and of course a head-to-head comparative report on the RS vs LT.

It's an amber 12V wide angle(inverted) LED that I had lying around. Then I made a then strip of steel about 1.5" ,ong with two holes in it. One hole is the size of the sump bolts, the other the size of the BA9S bulb that Iused. Then I soldered a wire onto the positive contact on the bulb and then epoxied it into the other hole. The steel strip provides the ground for the circuit to the engine block.

My stomach never gets near the tank - even fully leaned in for turns. I"m skinny and tall. Very Happy

About what you'd expect:

LT:

Upright riding postion

Great electric windscreen (great for half helmet or no helmet riding)

Tunes are great to have

Harder to get on the centerstand

RS:

Sportier, leaned over riding position

Cranks out more thigh heat than the LT

Loves to haul ass and get way leaned over

I haven't done the spline lube yet (winter project) but I fear it will be more difficult as my RS has ABS II

My advice: Get one of each. Beemered

Is the RS significantly faster?

Or is it essentially the same engine?

Yes, and yes.

The RS has smaller wheels, a more efficient faring(but less protection), a different final drive ratio (which actually favors the LT by a bit) and weighs 48 pounds less.

The factory spec 0-60 is 3.8sec for the RS and 4.3 for the LT.

But the engines are identical.

The other important thing is that you can lean your body in and over better on the RS wihch makes it more fun for aggressive twisties and, being faster, pulls out of the turns stronger when you crank the throttle.

Nice mods. My favorite is the coil cover plate. Think I'll make one for my RS. Any problems installing the Audiovox CCS-100?

No problems whatsoever. It's my third so it's pretty easy to do.

However, when I went to check on the coil wire connection on my LT to figure out which wire to tap into, the T-tap I had used cut the coil wire in half when I was fiddling with it. It was easy to fix but I don't think I'll be using T-taps anymore. Glad that it happened in the garage like that instead of a long way from home where I'd have to troubleshoot it and trakc it down - which would probably happen in the rain. Shocked

I think you got your wheels mixed up.

Accordin to my riders manual the LT has a 2.50x18 ft. & 3.00x17 r/whl

- RS has a 3.50x17 ft. & 4.50x18 r/whl

they "might" be close to the same diameter due to the radial low profile tires on the RS models - but the RS radial tires are wider ( and more expensive!)

rear drive ratios - LT 2.75:1 - RS 2.82:1

from US models K1100RS & K1100LT Riders Manual. c1996

You're right that the LT wheels are smaller. What I meant was that the RS tires have a smaller diameter because they have a smaller aspect ratio. So the RS tires have a smaller diameter/circumference of rubber on the road.

Diameter of LT rear 140/80-17 is 25.82" - circumference is 81.12"
Diameter of RS rear 160/60-18 is 25.56" - circumference is 80.30"

So the RS has a slight advantage there. (But before calculating it I did think it was more - probably an optical illusion since the RS wheel is actually bigger.)

As for the final drives, I am basing that on what's stamped on the top of my final drives:

93 LT: 32/11 - 2.91
94 RS: 31/11 - 2.82

Drake, great resource here - could keep me busy with ideas. What is the purpose of the cutouts on your coil cover? Why not make it solid?

What cutouts? Are you referring to the gaps at the bottom? Take your lower thing off - there's angled ribs in there - easier to just make a square piece that ends where it does than putz with that.

Bullshit answer: To allow proper coil cooling. Laughing
