Funny thing Jim, but that's exactly what I thought.
Is a shaft drive actually viable for a serious dual/offroad bike though? _________________ Bane of your existence since July 2006

Considering BMW's recent problems with drive shafts, I would be more opt to go for the chain :>) _________________ Dom |

Is that a spare or second gas tank to the side of the seat? _________________ "Still can't find 6th gear" 94 K1100LT |

That's the only gas tank just like the 650GS.

Yep. Talked about the drive system with two dealers in the last couple weeks. Chain drive was anticipated.
Shaft was considered unlikely due to the added weight/power loss resulting from changing rotation direction twice in a laterally-mounted engine. The R1200GS is a shafty, but even with a longitudinal engine layout, the bike is not lightweight. The HP2 version is light, but it has some high-dollar unobtainium materials in it's final drive to accomplish this.
Belt drive has advantages over chain but disadvantages off-road (rocks, etc.). This photo:

suggests that someone considered trying to protect/enclose a belt, but cost and/or viability probably prevented it from being realized.
The F800 platform seems to be geared somewhat at entry-level riders, but decent-quality Japanese bikes are available at $4000 less. According to the dealer I spoke with yesterday, sales are not great as apparently not too many buyers posess the "sophistication" to justify the upcharge. _________________ tlp

I have seen spy pics with a belt drive. I think development was started with a belt, then moved to the chain drive. I am willing to bet for the GS only on the street guys they will most likely make a belt conversion kit. I have no issues with the chain drive, they have worked for years and properly maintained they hold up well. _________________ 1997 K1100LT

I don't like the upper fender on the GS bikes. I understand the functionality but it just doesn't float my boat.
Was at the dealer yesterday talking to a sales guy while getting some misc. parts. Next time we have a sunny day here in Seattle(probably May or June ), I gonna ride over and take their red demo F800S for a spin. It only weighs a little over 400# and has 85hp so it should be a fun bike. _________________ 93 LT (x2)
