[Flying Duck]

So the belly pan on my Mystic Red RS is TRASHED on the front and underneath as well as a couple of light scrapes on the side from it's tipover when Russell had it. The front and bottom look like someone rode through a puddle of acid or something.

So, something has to be done.

What I'm thnking about doing is just getting the whole belly pan done in Linex or Rhino Liner. That way it will be bulletproff, easy to maintain and give the bike sort of an SE look. However, it'll probably have the truck bed liner texture which does cause me some consternation.

I ran by the Linex shop and they qutoed me $50 to do the belly pan in black.

On their webstie, Rhino claims they can color match but I'm not sure about that as the Mystic Red is metallic and I doubt they do metallic Rhino Liner - and if its not an exact match then it will look bad methinks.

So:

a) Should I do the bellypan in truck bed liner?

b) Red or black?

c) My mirror bodies are also scratched up, I'm considering having those done too. Would that be too ghastly with the Rhino Liner texture? Black mirrors on a red bike?


Oh, and the other thing is that I just installed a Staintune on that bike. The stainless on that looked like dog poo (I got it cheap) so I had it coated in a flat black ceramic. I figure that'll look decent if I get the belly pan done in black.

So, what do you guys think?

i like the black bottom the the rydor heap... perhaps its the blue black combo... i think it would look good on the red too... no opinion on the mirrors at this time...

but what the he11 do i know... my heap is hideous...

Rather than doing the whole bellypan, why not just do the bottom of it where the road debris is the worst. Then you can paint the sides with black and have a better look in profile.
Another alternative might be to get a fender extender on the front. It may not look nice, but if it is right, it will protect the belly a lot.

consider some variation of silver as it looks great with red or black and would provide the SE look.

OR...Here's a real different solution which is amazingly cheap: Get the grey trunk rubberized trunk paint is about $10-15 for two cans. the beauty is that you can fix any scrape with just a spritz or two. It covers a multitude of sins with virtually no surface prep. I had an R1100RS which had the "sissy pearl white" paint that was ridiculously expensive to match and painted both saddle bags with the stuff. I got numberous compliments from some rather well heeled BMW riders who thought I must have spent a fortune and sent them off to Germany for "the treatment". How bad can you get hurt for $15?

As for the mirrors, what about Black Crackle Paint? Just don't bake them in the oven too long and MAKE SURE the old lady is gone for the day when you cook them in the oven.

I'm a big fan of engine grade flat black spray enamel.

Easy to clean, easy to touch up, looks great with some Armor all.

Or try that try stuff Will was talking about.

Hi, Drake,
Harriet, my late wife, liked ladybugs. We needed to replace a mirror on her K75RT and were lucky enough to find one at the right price (free), in the wrong color (dark blue) and scratched. Harriet had it and the other (correct color - Marakkesh red, I think) mirror painted a semi-gloss black and it didn't look out of place. Personally, I would have preferred the red, but it was her bike. Her brother still has it and it still has the black mirrors.

FD, I also would reconsider the Rino treatment because of the added weight. The PO of my RS masked off a design on the front and bottom of the bellypan and painted it with black wrinkle paint. The wrinkle finish would hide most road wear and when it needed touching up, just hit it again with the spray paint.

As others have said, I would go with a flat black paint and not the Rhino. The fact that the paint was very heavy and did not like to flex is what ended up steering me away from the idea. If you would go with painting the mirrors a different color I would go with the silver belly pan and mirrors or a black belly pan and a stock Mystic Red for the mirrors.

Fulll belly pan would lokk fine in black. And the morrors too.

Be careful of the weight of the Rhino coating on the pan though.
