Here's the deal. Got a broken leg on the heal but it is going to be sometime to totally heal. I got two more operations to go. I have a 1996 K1100RS and a 1983 R100RT and now my thought are going to a sidecar so I can continue riding. What sidecars are available for my bikes and how hard to install? _________________ "Badges? We don't need no stinking badges"!

Hey Moonie,
Having not listened to my MC mentors & gone ahead & made my '82
R100CS into a hack, I may have a few opinions to share.
First off, everyone said don't do it. I wouldn't listen so I located a
Motorvation T-1 Spyder in Ca. & spent the big bucks to have it crated
& shipped to Mpls. I needed the sub-frame, so more dollars expended.
After I set it up & went for a short ride I discovered the need for more
steering leverage, off with the "S" bars, on with the "GS" bars, more
$$$, & if I had it do again I would find a used Unit brand leading link
front end. Steering a hack requires big forarms, like Popeye.
Long story short: I had delusions of taking my 2 sons & SO off on lovely
rides in the country. Reality, we took 1 twenty something mile ride as a
family. I was never so glad in my life as the day several years later that
I took the bathtub off my bike & put this experiment behind me. YMMV
Oh yeah, I'd mess with the airhead if I was determined to. I'd leave the
K bike alone. Also, Dauntless Motors may have some ideas for you to
investigate. Bring Money With. _________________ Kent

Yeah, I'm in agreement with Blackhoof, as far as Dauntless Motors goes....they ARE terrific in getting these things set up and educating you on the correct size and weight tub to buy for the application you choose....that IS very important or you'll be discussing "ballast"!
As for the cost...AGAIN, hope your wallet is overflowing! Looking at a few thousands...could go up to $5000-$8000 unless you settle for used and don't get overly enthralled with the good looking ones like LEGENDS!!!!
As for the ride, drove a couple, never owned one...different, very different....wouldn't say anything negative there except you DRIVE these babies, no leaning and aggressive corning with one of these!! But leisurely rides in the country is definately the norm.
Also, you pretty much NEED a front end like Blackhoof says...the earles style is the perfect fit....many aftermarket companies can accommodate there....
If you decide to go in that direction, I wouldn't discourage you considering your condition but along with Blackhoof, you'll need to go to the Pro's on this one for SIZE, FITTING, COST and ADVICE!!!
Good luck....exciting venture ahead

Moondog,
I've got an EML Speed 2000 on my 93 K1100RS, and its been geat fun.
http://www.k11og.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2580
http://www.k11og.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2195
For us its turned into a family thing. The oldest son (16) and I take it to Deal's Gap and have a blast, the wife now has an R80RT with and EML sidecar so we can load the youngest (11) son in there and go.
also see http://hpsidecars.com/
Its a lot different than riding, it has its own set of challenges, and is a lot of fun.
Before I would start to modify your K1100, I'd check for used, already rigged units, this past summer a K1100RS / EML like mine (before the upgrades was sold), and I think there is a Honda Blackbird with a Hannigan and center hub steering for sale if you'd consider non BMW's.

Unless you buy a Ural (Russian) or Chinese bike, whos look I actually like....especially the Ural, expect to pay huge bucks to rig a bike for a sidecar.
I like the Ural, but my grandfather was Russian (he was in the Russian revolution) so I am a bit biased.

Very true, That's why I recommended looking for an already rigged unit. When I originnally got my rig, I bought the K1100RS used and bought the sidecar new, and paid to have it rigged and painted. About two months after I got it on the road, an almost identical rig, down to year of the bike and color, and with fewer miles on the bike, sold for about half what I spent.
If you think a new car drops in value as soon as you come off the lot, try building a sidecar. _________________ Mike Currin

Those Ural's are way cool and quite reasonably priced. I keep trying to convince the misses that a Ural side car rig is the answer to her SUV gas and size issues.
I'd love to have one to go for family rides while the little ones are still little. _________________ Steve

I designed a subframe that mounted to my K75 back when my daughter was in 2nd grade and put a Vetter Terraplane hack on it. We rode it 10k miles around the country and at 80mph you could ride it with one hand easily. BUT! It's not motorcycle anymore and you have to learn to ride all over again, nothing that you know about motorcycle applies. Now you have to turn the handlebars in curves instead of leaning. Leading link front ends are a big advantage on hack rigs. I think it would be easier to build a temporary rear drive off a car to make it a 3 wheeler than to mount a hack! The airhead would be the easiest for chair but you give up a lot of fuel economy and again, it isn't motorcycling! It's very critical how you set up the hack , toe in , lean out, and hack wheel location. I did my homework before I set it up. I bought the Terraplane for around $1300, built the subframe for probably $100 in materials and easily built with common tools. I got 30 mpg at 80 mph on the interstates , better on 2 lane roads at 90(just kidding)! Find you a good looking babe that you can ride behind and hold on to! _________________ I work on anything! Thank you gentlemen for all your input. The tri-wheel sounds like an option also. If I convert any bike it will probably be the R bike. I would like to keep the K-bike pristine. Besides I just invested 1100 smackers in a new paint job on it. I got lots of time. I got two more operations or possibly a new knee on the horizon. Oh fun..... _________________ "Badges? On the trike setup I had looked at the BMW car rear drive since it has the independent suspension with axles bolted to the output shafts near the differential which would allow you to offset the rear drive to align the driveshaft with the output of the transmission. Then I had thought to just build a simple transfer case with two parallel shafts/gears to connect the drive unit so I could incoperate a reverse gear. You could bolt the trike frame to the bolts that secure the transmission and shocks on the K bike and use the struts off the car to the rear drive. I had the reverse setup thought out also. I may build one here soon for friends that have physical impairments that hender them from riding. I changed the shifter on a R100 for a friend of mine that has only the right foot so he can shift and brake with same foot! I like a challenge! I have a 1970 V7 Guzzi and Spirit Eagle car if you want a project to build. The bike runs ok, just needs going through and checking everything, have new carbs for it also.

owrstrich, What is availability of adapter kits for the R100RT with this side car?
Funny how I am getting more negative feed back then positive from friends on side cars. There seems to be alot out there. someone must be enjoying them? _________________ "Badges? We don't need no stinking badges"!

I think the negativity is from those who built it from scratch.
It is a laborious, costly project.
Might be better off to buy one already built, or someone else's project.
Actually what the hell do I know, I just wanted to use laborious in a sentence. _________________ Bane of your existence since July 2006

If you try a sidecar with the idea its just a motorcycle with a big saddlebag on the right, you'll be disappointed. Its a completely different experience, one a lot of us find fun, but not for everyone. You'll have to unlearn a lot of what you know about riding bikes.
If after hours of parking lot practice, on your first road ride you find yourself a little wide in a right hand turn, you automatically conter steer a little bit, only to find yourself in the left hand ditch, you'll scare yourself half to death. The sit there awhile and decide if you just put a lot of money down a rabbit hole or if your willing to continue to learn how these stinkin things work. (true story) In my case I continued on, and have had great fun with the sidecar, snince then my wife purchased an R80RT with an EML Tour T sidecar, which our 16 year old son is trying to talk her out of.
Ths sidecar never completely replaced two wheelers, I still have the Yamaha GTS for two wheel travel, and the 67 Triumph Chopper for reliving my youth.
Also
In the new BMW ON, Dave Hough's K1 / RDS rig is for sale.
Also again
New England seems to be a hot spot for High Peformance Sidecars (relatively speaking, we get maybe 10 rigs at our HP Sidecar Gathering each year.) There are soem Hayabusa and Honda Blackbirds up that way with sidecars.

Thanks owrstrich, after asking that question I thought about shipping something that big. I'll see if I can find one closer.
And on the other thought, if we go through life and not challenge our selves then we miss out on an experience we might enjoy. I am willing to try anything once. That is why I probably won't get married again. Been there, done that . Was no fun first time around. Riding a hack has got to be easier then having a ball and chain on. _________________ "Badges? Bit off topic but....
| Quote: | | That is why I probably won't get married again. Been there, done that Shocked. Was no fun first time around. |
My first wife, an Italian woman who's parent were off the boat decided that our life was not moving ahead fast enough, that we were not rich enough, didn't own a house...our cars were not new enough.
I was working 3 jobs, spent 15k of my own money on our wedding and put her through graduate school.
When I started to go back to school to get my masters that is when the rift started.
We got divorced and I got shattered. Crushed and devastated like nothing else other than getting your heart broken can do.
The sense of loss and confusion (who is this person, and where is the woman I married?) was only heightened by the fact that she remarried a 43year old Jewish stockbroker within a year and converted. (she was 30)
(Religion only noted for story, we got married in a catholic church at her request, I am protestant)
Took a long time to recover...almost 3 years.
I swore I would never get married again, ever. I swore I would never make concessions or placate any woman.
But.....
After some fun flings I met this little Brazilian girl who changed my life....again.
All I am saying is...never say never.
I actually saw my first wife a few months ago and thanked her for divorcing me. (yes I was with my wife at the time)
Sorry for the rambling, unsolicited diatribe.
But that sentence struck a chord. _________________ Bane of your existence since July 2006

Hey Dave, GREAT story...I'm happy to say that 'cause it worked out well for you. I TOO have that same story, ...well very close anyway, so It's reallly great to see that life works out for some of us like that. My wife is a full-blood quantum Native American half way thru her PhD...so I'm set!
Anyway...more insight into Dave...that's good...I'll lay off the "sausage" joke now....
Thanks for the personal story...lifted me up in the process _________________ Be ashamed to die before you've won some victory for mankind! |
