Before:
$125+$37 Shipping = 165ish.
Yeah it's scratched, and dinged up. But hey, can't beat that price.
Stock bike exhaust (how it looks now)
$300, a week later and a satin black ceramic coating:
So we are looking at a $460 exhaust so far, and my mechanic still has to put it on. (no way I am doing this job in the cold we are having)
My crappy digital camera does not do it justice. It is simply phenomenal. That is my kitchen table btw, and it's still there. Love my tolerant wife, she understands the depth of my obsession.
Oh yeah, the finished product?
Stay tuned and see.............. _________________ Bane of your existence since July 2006

Thanks guys, did the wheels black quite a while ago when I was doing front brakes. The worst part was pulling off the front rotors and taping everything.
I did it as well as a sidewalk mechanic can do it, sanded with 400 grit sandpaper, 1 coat of primer and 2 coats of engine-grade flat black rattle can enamel.
About 10$ in parts, 2-3hrs of time, mostly waiting for paint to dry, and I am still giddy to this day with the results. Completely changes the look of the bike imo.
And the best part....almost zero to maintain. Looks good for weeks where the dull aluminum finish would get cruddy after a ride no matter how much your scrubbed em. _________________ Bane of your existence since July 2006

First off, let me tell you what an idiot I am.
Like, a total, impulsive moron.
That said, heres the story...........
Set out to replace the pipe today, it was beautiful and 60 degrees out.
My shop.
Garage owners, eat your heart out. Although I lust for a full shop with a lift and walls full of power tools, until we buy a house that ain't gonna happen. (should be about 2 years)
I do have a decent tool collection and all of the "basics" and still do 70% of the work on my bike myself. (ok, with Drakes help too)
Pipe off, not so hard. I am officially getting excited.
Rut oh. This does not look so good. But fark it, I'm putting on the sick, 460 freshly painted Remus, right?
Check out the block. Man is that sucker dirty. And is that some oil from the bottom right of the valve cover? (top left of picture)Tighten down the bolts a bit and cross your fingers.
I also spotted what looked to me to be the sidestand switch on the right there above the rusted sidestand, that little lever that actuated when the sidestand went down. So I thought to my self, self? Why not just zip tie that sucker down, fooling the bike into thinking the stand is always up? Eureka! Again, cross my fingers and hope it works. If it doesn't I can always clip off the zip tie.
So now, the moment of truth.
Popped on the O2 sensor after cleaning it, lined up the headers and.......it doesn't fit. Not a chance.
Its a Remus for another K, but not mine. The O2 sensor goes directly into the tranny and the heatshield is about 1-2" too long and wrong for the bike.
Talk about deflated. And pissed. And feeling like a royal tool.
Hard lesson learned here folks. Never ever buy a part unless you are 100% sure it will fit your bike.
Check them out, no can on the Remus yet.
Having been an impulsive person since forever, I learned a very expensive lesson on this one. 160 (shipped) for the pipe and then 300 (this was the killer) to have it painted was just flat-out asinine without making sure that it fit my 93 K1100LT.
I will never get close to the 460 total I put into it, but I figure maybe asking around 320 or 340 shipped would be a good start.
What do you guys think?
So the day was not a total loss. I got to work on my motorcycle (always a good day) going to get the pipe welded tomorrow, and then carefully sand, prep and paint the stock pipe flat black with exhaust grade paint.
I also took off both crash bars and going to do the same to them.
/shrug
Could be worse. It always could be worse. _________________ Bane of your existence since July 2006

Damn OTG that sucks
Do you know what model and year that Remus set-up is for? Doesn't look like it would fit my K either. |

It might not hurt to hold off before ripping into sanding that exhaust. Do you have experience painting stainless steel? I don't, but I recall a friend of mine , who was a body-man and painter talking about the trouble he had trying to get paint to stick to a DeLorean (remember those) which has a stainless body. Why don't you do some digging before you set yourself up for some more grief?

Dan,
I did, and a lot of work with 200 finishing with 400 grade metal oxide sandpaper will do it, followed by a flat back finish with an enamel that's rated to 1500 degrees.
Don't worry, I'll post pics when shes done and put back together. _________________ Bane of your existence since July 2006

Dave,
Sorry for your loss $$$. I have a Remus on my '93 & when I first
looked at your posted pic, I thought that's strange my Remus don't
look like that. Now I find out my gut instinct was correct. Dang, I
hate when that stuff happens... _________________ Kent

Well might as well finalize this thread.
Decided to paint my exhaust anyway. Hell it was off right?
What a PITA to paint let me tell you.
Paint shop
Here's what I used, check out the nice bead my welder did for me on the stock pipe: 20 bucks whoohoo!
Finished product. Turned out better than I thought. Only spot that will be a problem is the area right by where the center stand is....my foot rubs it when I get the center stand down. Needs touch ups every few weeks.
Otherwise, looks great!
Will post better pics when I get em.

I liked the look "all black" of your KLT!
Very "works" bike.
