I've got the ABS I on my bike. But a friend who's been helping me with my fuel pump problem asked me a question about his ABS II system that I'm forwarding to the K11OG:

"When I bought my RS, 4 years ago, the lights were flashing. I took it to the BMW shop and they "reset" the system and it never failed again. Recently the lights don't go out when I first start off. I can go a block, shut it off, restart, ride off and they immediately go out...any ideas on that one? pj"

Any feedback? Thanks.

1) Battery nearing the end of it's life. ABS brains are sensitive to low voltage.

2) Bad electrical conncetion. ABS sensors, ABS brain harness, possibly battery terminals.

Wouldn't hurt to check the spacing on the ABS sensors either or there may be some dirt in the gap.

since the lights go off after riding, I'd say it's probably the battery. If pj has a battery tender, he can try keeping it on the charger. If that resolves the ABS light issue, then it's most likely the battery.

Battery - no doubt about it.

I have been through the same scenario twice, and judging from what you describe, I would suggest changing the battery. It probably isn't operating at 100% and the ABS is very very sensitive to low voltage at start up, which is why after the battery takes a little "boost" in charge the fault disappears. I have spent a lot of money only to figure out I need a stickin battery.

Folks

I've just finished the restoration of my K11 LT, and can confirm that the above is 100% correct.

My 1994 ABS II dashboard is different to that described in the sticky threads, but appears to function the same.

There are two red ABS lamps (highlighted in white), and the brake warning lamp extinguishes when both brake controls are tested.

I observed the following :

Ignition on - Both ABS lamps flash, in sync.
Start engine - Both ABS lamps flash, alternately
Press ABS Reset - Left lamp extinguish, Right is constant.

During cranking, the battery voltage dipped to 10.6v Shocked
So, I hooked up a portable jumpstart tender in parallel :

Ignition on - Both ABS lamps flash, in sync.
Start engine - Both ABS lamps flash, in sync.
Disconnect second battery
Ride Off - Both ABS lamps extinguish.
Smile, go and make pot of tea.

Follow the test steps slowly, and logically - you will find the culprit Cool

Happens to me every so often on my '96 LT. Usually when I don't put it on the tender for 4-6+ weeks during winter.

It means you're battery won't charge up as full as it used to, so it's can't deliver enough voltage to start and init the ABS system.

The best solution is a fresh battery, but this will get you by:

Start the bike, warm it up a little bit, drive off. Not the alternating flashing.
Drive a block or two just to ensure it's slightly warm.
Shut the bike off.
Turn the ignition off and then back on.
Start the bike
Drive away. ABS should init properly since it takes less juice to start a warm bike.

That has almost always worked for me.

My question is not exactly for a K11, but is similar:
Does anyone know anything about the ABS warning light blinking as a permanent result of a low battery? I read somewhere that the ABS brain can be damaged from a battery that was too low?
It's a 91 K1 that has the problem; bought the bike last year and judging from the tape residue over the ABS light, it must have been a problem that's been around awhile.
I haven't taken it to the dealer to have it "reset" though. Is there a way I can do the reset? Or is it worth having the dealer try?
Guess that's it from me. Your thoughts are appreciated.

This is an FAQ - described in detail on the Tech pages Rolling Eyes

http://www.k11og.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2110

Your K1 will have ABS I (two separate cylindrical actuators). The answer is appx 1/3 way down the page, but it will be good primer for you to read the full thread Smile
