What are the differences between the 93 and 94 K11RS? Does anyone know why the changes were made? Preferences? _________________ Kipp

The two big ones I remember are a jump in the size of the alternator to 720w and an upgrade (some believe downgrade) from ABS-I to ABS-II. _________________

Kipp,
The 1993 year had ABS 1 and a larger battery. The ABS 2 units on 1994-96 on the RS function slightly better and weigh a little less. The splines were a little beefed up having a Nikisil coating on them from 94 on. The amp output was a little better with the late 1993- on models putting out 700watts vs 580 of the early models. The super early 1993's had Showa forks on them vs the Marzocchi for the later years, IMHO no improvement there . For whatever reason, the 93's seem to have more coil related problems then the later models. Otherwise they are the same. _________________ Dom |

Well I have got a tough decsion to make...I have a 93 with 15k miles on her and a 94 with 55K miles on her. One must go, but which one????
How do you tell the difference between the 2 brands of forks on the 93s? _________________ Kipp

Kipp - which one do you like better? Which one pleases you most? Which do you enjoy riding the most? Neither has significant mileage - that's not an issue. Alternators can be changed, forks rebuilt, etc. _________________ Jim

Both bikes are a pleasure although the 93 feels tighter in a good way. I think the rear shock is in better shape (mileage). I thought there may have been a difference between th fuel injection and performance due to different on board computer Mikotronic (sp). I do not notice any but don't understand why the changes were made between these years.
Is sounds like the 94 has no significant advantage over the the 93 bikes, so why is BMW change (cost reductions)???? _________________ Kipp

No shit!
My '93 has 154,800+ miles.
IMHO, keep the one that pleases you the most.

Take the engine and shock from the '93 and put them in the '94. ABSII looks better (ie you can't see it) plus the higher rated alternator is useful. _________________ 1980 CB900FA

All the reading I have done always acclaim the 93s as the "best".
Pay no mind to the fact that I own a 93. _________________ Bane of your existence since July 2006

Keep the '94. At 50k it's just barely broken in. Besides, '94's are clearly SUPERIOR |

My 93 LT had under 14k on it when I bought it on 2005.
I'd go for the lower mile bike. Upgrading the alternator isn't really necessay if you're not running big driving lights. I run a pair of 55w Hellas and a 90/100W headlight and had to upgrade to the larger amp - but's it's a pretty easy swap.
Get the last 7 digits of the VIN. Then go here to find the manufacturing year and month:
http://www.bmw-z1.com/VIN/VINdecode-e.cgi
The ETK only shows one type of forks installed on the K1100LT. It shows the earlier forks were only put on the RS in 1/93 ao I'd be willing to bet $5 that the 93 has Marzocchi forks. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

I got a manufacture date of 1/93 for my VIN #.
Funny thing. At first I mistakely entered the last 7 digits (actually 1 letter and 6 numbers) of my Triumph Sprint ST and got this:
Chassis number J173646
Vehicle code BE53
Series E36
Model 318is ( 318is M42 )
Body type coupe
Catalog model USA
Production date 1991 / 11
Engine M42
Transmission Manual
Steering Left
Catalyzer YES
Seems it comes out as a 1991 BMW 318is coupe The Steering Left threw me at first, my ST's always steered from the middle _________________ Mark Rooney

Flying Duck it looks like you would be out $5, my 93 shows a production date of 93/01.
Interestingly enough my 94 shows a production date 93/10.
Duck- I do have the 55Whellas, but have not intalled them. Are you still running these? Are you still using the brackets you fabbed out of aluminun and installed on the brake caliber bolts?
Looks like I am leaning toward keeping the 93.

Just to get the numbers up for those routing for '94s I will add my vote. Then again I have never ridden a '93. And the VIN on my '94 comes back as 11/93 so maybe I can have a foot in both camps. But I'm sure the Marzocchi forks would be smoother in the twisty bits and the ABSII is lighter of course making the whole bike faster. _________________ 1980 CB900FA

| 1996 was the last year for the K1100RS, and 1998 for the LT. |

1997 was the last year for K11 in the US - other parts of the world market got it until 2000 - well, at least 1999 (IIRC).
