Not sure where it came from. Last thing I remember is removing the coolant overflow tank and looked down to find this on the floor. Did it nest with the overflow tank? Is it part of the fairing? I was definitely on the right side of the bike, so I presume it came from there.
The bike is a 93 K11RS.
Please reply if you know what this is. Thanks.

hi avidfan,
look at this section of the fiche: 11_1829. Go here first: http://www.maxbmwmotorcycles.com/fiche/MainDiagrams.asp?mospid=47928 then scroll down to "heat screening, engine".
The heat screening parts are molded rubber. They can break - you may be looking at a piece that broke off. It that's the case, you can usually see where it broke.
They use the same diagram for the LT and the RS - just list different parts for the bikes.

Look at the other side. It blocks the air coming through the fairing (supposedly) At least that's what your pic looks like but it seems like you would remember removing it. _________________ Scott Hespelt, '94 K11LT

MY K75RT had a similar "mystery part" when I took the whole fairing off for a repaint. It took a while to figure out where it went but I eventually did. It went above the cam cover on the right side. IF you try in enough different weird positons you'll eventually find where it went. It only fits in one place, you just have to find it. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

I had the same "mystery part." Nice to know I wasn't the only one Definitely comes from the right side. I found a place where it "fit." Sounds like the same area Duck's referring to. _________________ "Some things I know, some things I don't"

Don't know if you got this resolved or not....and the responses so far are correct. It goes on the right side...and fits just under the mid bracket that mounts the right side upper fairing, just above the oil pan (the one with the view window to check oil level) and it will slide into a recessed groove (bolt head in view @ bottom of groove) on the oil pan. You will have to remove the runner that comes from the top (2 screws just below the temp guage) down the side, with the one large screw at the bottom that holds it on. It does help keep the heat off marginally....I would recommend you get it back on to save your thighs on those hot days..... _________________ REDBRICK, '96RS (formerly owned), K11OG#5

Me too, I just gave up and left it off.
Could someone take a pic of it installed and post it?
It sure would help me _________________ 1993 K1100RS aka The Shop Whore

You don't want to leave it off. It fits between the fairing and air box to keep you from scalding your right thigh in the summer! _________________ Scott Hespelt, '94 K11LT

Shog, I removed the runner on my 93 to snap a pic for you, and found the part lying loose. Obviously, I didn't have it in the proper place. My 96 is opened up for maintenance, so I went over and began trying different spots using Allen's description. With that in mind, I think I found where it goes:
If this isn't the right place, I'm stumped. By the way, this part is not on my 96. Was it discontinued or am I just missing the part? _________________ "Some things I know, some things I don't"

Dave, Thank you so much
I have to take the fairing off to do some work here soon and I'll try that fit _________________ 1993 K1100RS aka The Shop Whore

BINGO..........you got it Dave......
It's been a while since I had the fairing off and with out the bike I wasn't sure. So a more apt description of where its located would be, "it inserts under the bracket where the large (single) screw anchors the runner at the bottom". All you should have to do is remove the runner and loosen the bracket to squeeze it into place and retighten the bracket (be careful not to tighten to much....you don't want to strip anything)...they do have a tendency to loosen and fall out some times, I used to apply a coating of 3M adhesive to help keep it in place, but even that stuff dries out and fails due to the heat....... _________________ REDBRICK, '96RS (formerly owned), K11OG#5
