|
|
Picked up a quality set of 50w halogen bulbs for my motolites, when presented with the choice between spot and flood, I picked one of each.
I figured why not, flood for short range, spot for longer distances.
My question is this:
Which side should I mount them? Obviously I want to avoid blinding drivers and want the best corner illumination. I was thinking spot on the left (closest to the center of the road) and flood on the right. (towards the shoulder)
Thoughts and why?

well - give it try - let us know how it works out... Don't know if the flood will throw too much light to the left. I think the motolights come with a specific beam angle so there isn't too much scatter - but I'd have to go to their website to figure that out...
I think what you have to watch is the angle of the beam.
"Step 1 Obtain new lamp. TAKE CARE TO NEVER TOUCH THE BULB IN THE NEW LAMP. If you do touch it you must clean it with rubbing alcohol and a clean cotton cloth. Our original equipment lamp is a 35 watt 8 degree MR16 halogen lamp made by Sylvania. Any MR16 lamp up to 75 watts will work with the Motolight housing and harness but as a general rule the higher the wattage lamp the wider the beam spread which results in increased glare to oncoming traffic." _________________ Jim

OTG - something else I just thought about - the original Motolight harness isn't all that great - mine is getting kind of crispy, and I'm only running 35W bulbs. If you put in 50W bulbs, kind of keep an eye on the harness - you don't need a $,1000 fire this year... _________________ Jim

I have the 50w spots and they don't bright enough to blind other drivers. I was thinking I'd use them more to be seen rather than me seeing better. With the spots I think the illumination is pretty much lost in the overlap with the headlight (90/100). I'd put the flood on the left to see the road a bit better. Next time I think I might just opt for the floods.
Hope that helps,

another thought, a flood, or wide angle on the left would help on those blind left handers. A spot on the right for added midrange since right turns the headlite shines up to the right. _________________ early 1993 K1100LT |

Just my 2 pence (GBP), I had a pair of spots & I crossed them. I.E. the right one illuminates the left of the road. Helps no end seeing into corners. A rally drivers tip. _________________ Regards Tim,
