|
|
Not sure when or how it happened.. .but I spilled some fuel down the left side of my gastank..... Looks like when it leaned on its kickstand there was a spill.... anyway, I didnt notice it I guess... and now my paint is messed up...
the bike's paint is black.... and the drip marks look a dull black....
My question is.... would I be able to smooth out the uglies by using rubbing compound on the area, and then waxxing?
Figure I would ask the group first, before I make an ugly mess of things....
I plan on getting the tank repainted in the future...
but for now, I just want to try and clean it a bit....
thanks in advance

Normal gasoline should not leave a permanent mark. I would suggest washing as normal and after drying using your usual wax polish

Shouldn't have to use rubbing compound, just polish or cleaner wax. If you do use rubbing compound, do so gingerly with a wet rag. Once you rub too hard there is no going back except to repaint. _________________ '93 K1100LT

Just wash with a mild soap and water solution and for a polish… Before I purchased the BMW project, I was looking for information to polish the Honda VT600CD. Lemon scented Pledge furniture polish was the preferred product according to my very unscientific poll. Call me crazy, but it works great. Just put it on the towel/rag first, then apply to painted surface. _________________ 1993 K1100LT/On going project

I'd try Mequiars Cleaner Wax.
I use Pledge on my vinyl seats. Better than Armor All. I don't use Lemon Pledge though. It attracts bees and I"m somewhat allergic to bee stings. (Ask Allen - he saw me with my eye swollen shut after a bee flew into my helmet one day. ) _________________ 93 LT (x2)

The tank is factory finished with a 2-pack clear acrylic, the hardest paint finish over the past 30 years (modern, water based clear coats are not as tough).
Has it been resprayed ? Low budget acrylic colour coats are susceptible to modern unleaded fuels. Home resprays with aerosols are notorious for spoiling on the first fill-up
If you want a gentle abrasive, I recommend a smokers toothpaste
Rub in straight lines, rather than a circular motion.
A clear wax, and the old girl will shine (In the UK, I like Autoglym, but Mothers/Meguiars are becoming more popular here !) _________________ C1 200 (2001)
