Going to work the other day (a 120km trip) and 30km into the trip Kay decieded to come to a very quick stop. Frightened the hell out of me, hit the screen with my nose ( riding with the visor up), I grabed the clutch and next thing I was stopped. Couldn't move the bike as the back wheel was jammed. After I got her home
Look what I found
The final drive end
The shaft in the swing arm
Most of the Uni
Have been quoted $875 for a new complete shaft.
Could have been worse I suppose _________________ Stephen, Leanne and Kay ('95 K1100LT)

Holy snikey's, that could have been bad. I'm glad to hear you
survived.
How many miles on your bike? Had you done any spline/u-joint
lubes? _________________ Kent

I like the retro hard bags. Good to see that you didn't go down on this one.
I have a good rear half of the drive shaft that I'll sell you for $110US shipped. Drop me a PM or email if interested. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

I saw a similar fact in a K1200LT with 98000km, with a custom torque arm, to keep the bike more high. I thought that the more accentuated angle of the joint in the shaft was the problem.
But I already heard that the universal joints in the shaft of the K11 and K12 are prono to fail after the 100.000km barrier.
Before I rode to Chile, I complete disassembled the final drive, to se the joints and that big bearing in the diff. All vas right, with 57000km.
In the 100k, I'll have to see again, I believe..

"Old style" (retro) hard cases - notice that the reflector and BMW roundel are right next to each other:
Newer hard cases. They have rubber scuff pads, are large enough to fit a full faced helmet and the locks face outwards, not inwards:
(Edit: If you're seeing red X's, it's not my fault. My ISP, Comcast, is utterly worthless. Come back later and the pictures will show up - at random intervals. ARGHHHHH!!!!!) _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Holy crap! Any weird vibrations or any other sign of its impending demise?
Glad you got it pulled off with nary a scratch! _________________

Thanks Ted, no indication was given that there was something amiss. _________________ Stephen, Leanne and Kay ('95 K1100LT)

The break of the axle of the K1200LT of my friend also happened withoth any warn, and was no notice before the fact.
I was imagining what might happen a light jolt at the moments of acceleration / slowing down. But nothing of that happened.
He would exchange the axle, but the carcass of the differential one managed to repair them to he.

G'day Stephen
Try Motohansa in Sydney or Munich Motorcyles in Perth for a new shaft.
Glad to hear that you are all right. Very sad to see a K on on tow truck. _________________ Ride safe

Same thing happened to me.
With very similiar damage - at 110kph this time, with no warning. I thought I'd had a rear blowout, but managed to stay upright.
The bikes a 95 LT with 88k on the clock.
Cost me $1300 all up with a new shaft and bearings etc.
Hopefully I have another 88k before I need to think about it again. |

Thankfully our generation of BMWs do not seem to suffer FD failures at the rate of the later models, but it is disconcerting at any rate. _________________ Bane of your existence since July 2006

This was on a paralever system common to all post '93 K1100.
Although I suspect that there may be a question as to the possibility
that the U joints were out of sync.
Which may or may not have contributed to the failure.
I for one will make sure mine are synced having seen first hand what might/could/possibly happen. Can't do any harm to have them synced.
Can it ? |
