I am liking it here.

So far...........flying duck I believe got me a lock while being out of town. Lets call that wizardous. And it appears (trying to finish up work.....most likely install it midnight Wed. before leaving AM Thursday) I am going to have a locking left glovebox for our trip to Grand Canyon this weekend. Thank you LOTS!!!!!!!!!

Now for a quick question. I bought my K1100LT with 94,000 miles last May. It now has 103,000+ and is leaving for almost 2000 mile trip this weekend (plus a few days either side)

It seems to run fine. I have replaced rear brake pads......assume I will be replacing fronts this summer. the bushings in one side of the front disc brakes, Tires, oil changes every 3000ish, and Air filter, and plugs the last couple of weeks.

What else should I be expecting? I took it in to the BMW mechanic last summer to mount the new tires, he told me to expect a clutch, because it "looked like it was going to need one" He was kind enough to tell me not to worry about it until it started slipping..........because they typically would start to slip well before I needed a new one. well......that was like 8000 miles ago.......no slipping yet.

this has been great..........I review the upgrades on the website, it appears most of the upgrades and options available were purchased and installed by the first owner. It has only vacuume locked on me once. I have had to relieve pressure in the tank by opening the lid on hot days when it is near empty. Other than that no problems.

Is this what I should be expecting?

How long does a clutch typically last? Anything else I should worry about?

Thanks and I will post some pictures when I get back.

Ken

Clutch life varies based on how the bike is ridden. I'd guess 60-90 but that's just a guess.

If you're having sticky downshifts(like 4->3 and 3->2), that means you need a clutch spline lube before your trip.

Other than that, aside from normal periodic maintenance, just wait for stuff to break. Don't take the the wrong way, K bikes are good solid bikes. I saw one yesterday with 219,xxx miles on it - and that's one that pulls a big heavy sidecar. He said he blew a head gasket a little while ago and that was the biggest problem he'd had. Your bike is still young.

I will just have to wait until I get back and check this clutch spline thing, just not enough time to look into it. Obviously should have joined the club actively earlier this year.

I am sure that most of the trip will be in 5th anyway.

There hasn't been any grinding, or new vibrations, so I have to hope and assume that it will hold up until I get back.

Thanks for the lock.

Your service guy should be able to do a mod to eliminate the vapor lock. It involves rerouting the vent hose (which goes to a REALLY stupid place) and removing the flap. It gains you a tiny bit more fuel capacitiy, too.

The problem I had was pressurizing the tank. When a small leak appeared again near the left rear tab on the tank, the pressure was strong enough to make a tiny stream shoot out pretty strongly. I could ride w/o a leak if I vented it every few miles.

I have a new tank now and the mod was made when putting it in. It's never given me that telltale sound when popping the cap since.

If your service guy looks at you weird when you mention it, I know it was a mod that dealers were trained on. Ted Porter at The Beemershop knows all about it. http://www.thebeemershop.com/

You don't need a tech to do this mod. Ted, Jim, or Duck, what's the part called that the fuel lines dump into? I hate getting old. Crying or Very sad

I was thinking of this:

http://k11og.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3644&highlight=fuel+cup

http://k11og.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2540&highlight=fuel+cup

http://k11og.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1862&highlight=fuel+cup

http://k11og.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=571&highlight=accumulator

The last one gives the part # and calls the part an "air accumulator."

OH - that thing. The thing under the tank - I thought you were trying to think of the thing IN the tank.
