I am going to lube my rear drive spline and have read the threads and been on IBMWR. I want to do both sides of the drive shaft and I am wondering how easy it is to get the shaft out of the paralever and to get it back in. It sounds like you can see into the paralever well enough to line up the u joints so I would like to not take off the paraleve if I do not have to.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Rich

the spline that are most critical to service are the transmission Input splines, a slightly more complicated proceedure than you describe.

The dive shaft slines are only critical to service on the non-paralever K's.

Rich,

Shaft R&R is very doable w/o removing the swing arm. It take a little effort to overcome the force of the clip on removal but a good yank with channel locks and a rag will do it. May be able to pry out with a screwdriver through the pivot locations, can't remember. Be sure to phase the u-joints when re installing. A mini-mag light will help with the alignment of the front joint. A light tap of the shaft will seat the front clip onto the transmission output shaft. Good luck

Thanks,

I am prepped to do a complete drive, transmission and clutch spline lube depending on what I find. I've read that the drive splines should be done about every 20k with the other splines being done about 40k. My bike has 25k on it but when I got it as a salvage it had been sitting for 5 years unused so I'll see what the drive splines look like before I go deeper into it.

If it sat for 5 years then chances are that the O-ring on the clutch nut is dry and cracking. If I were you, I'd pull the tranny and replace tha O-ring just for peace of mind.

Also, once you have the final drive off, it's not that much more work to remove the swing arm.

Just my .02 though.....

Well I am into the spline lube and while I am there I am replacing the rear main seal, transmission input seal and clutch o-ring. I also found that my pivot bearings on the rear drive where shot so I am getting the JL bushings to replace them with. I also found that I had a leak in the rear drive so that seal is getting replaced also. The splines are in great shape and look almost new but did not have much lube on them which is probably why shifting was getting hard.
