I've tried everything. Infinity Kappas, regular Infinitites, Blaupuunkt, Audiobahn, Pioneer, etc..... These are the best yet. I have the high pass filter on my Pioneer head unit set to 125Hz which keeps the "woofers" from distorting and blowing.
They have a 2" mounting depth. This means that I had to grind down some of the strucutral ribs inside of the fairing. That doesn't bother me much though since I know that the fairing will crack there anyhow if the mirror hits with any force. (I learned this the hard way with a few downs on my K75RT.) Even after I gound down the ribs, it's still a VERY tight fit but I was able to get the fairing panel back on.
Face it, you'll never get really good bass out of a 4" speaker but these are the best I've tried so far. They're also the first speaker I haven't blown in the first 1,000 miles of riding.
Best price on these is $70 (w/ free shipping) at:
http://www.woofersetc.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&product_id=869
I found these surfing some audiophile sites. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

I happen to have an "extra" rear trunk without speaker mounts. So...I cut 14 1/4" slots along where the lumbar pad used to be. I went out and found the wire mesh for speaker covers and formed it to fit the slight curve. Inside, I mounted 2 6x9 Rockford Fosgates with a little rigged bracket that I bolted to the bottom of the trunk. Replaced my carpeting and hooked up a 50watt amp and some pretty blue lights (just for S&Gs) inside the trunk. Outcome?
Plenty of bass and killer highs! The lid stays closed and speakers stay dry! I even have enough room in trunk for small items! The amp helps to kick the sound forward at 80mph. Nothing like some Wilson Pickett blasting at ya down the freeway!
I'll post some pics soon.

Couple of weeks with these speakers in and they definately do make a noticeable difference.
Loud enough to hear at 80mph with a full face and the shield open....clear too no or minimal distortion.
Getting them to fit is a pita though, I had to 86 my antenna (Which I never use anyway) and grind down the left fairing skeleton piece.
Like Drake said, hopefully they will not blow like many other speakers have.
I was at a light waiting to go to my auto mechanic who was in the shop waiting. He said he heard the Nickleback clearly from the light and was laughing when he said, "You have no idea how loud that is, do you?"
Money well spent imo. _________________ Bane of your existence since July 2006

I've got 3700 mles on my CDTs now and haven't blown one yet- a personal best for speaker longevity. I think having the high pass filter on the head unit set to 125 Hz helps eliminate distortion.
My custom seat I had done last summer is NOT working out so I'll have to go and have some rework done on it. A buddy of mine had some "Bass Shakers" from one of his past cars lying around and he gave them to me.
When I have the seat redone I'm going to pull up the foam, install a bass shaker on the underside of the seat, hook up a small subwoofer amp to the head unit and pump the bass through the seat.
It'll be like when Howard Stern gets hot chicks/lesbians to sit on their speakers and turn up the bass.
OTG: Did you grind down the little rim on the inside of the fairing dash panel? Mine are really CRAMMED in there but I was able to get things back together that way and keep my antenna. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

I don't have like a Dremel so I did the best I could busting the crap out of that fiberglass piece with a large wire cutter.
It MIGHT have fit with more trimming, but those little fiberglass pieces flying around made me nervous. _________________ Bane of your existence since July 2006

Only took a month and a half, left speaker blew yesterday.
And I never ride with the volume more than 80%.
For the price and mods/pain in the ass factor required to mount, I cannot give these a positive endorsement. _________________ Bane of your existence since July 2006

It's probably the bass that killed them. My head unit has 125Hz high pass filter (only sound above 125Hz gets through)
You can also implement your own high pass filter using a capacitor. (a.k.a.bass blocker)
Like this 150Hz bass blocker:

Friends,
I installed a pair of POLK AUDIO DB401 speakers in the front of my LT
I've had them for a month and am very satisfied. Why did I pick these given the excellent review by Drake on the CDT-CL-4X?
Main reasons:
1) Ease of installation. I did not want to grind down the structural ribs inside the fairing.
2) I wanted speakers that are marine rated
Minor reasons:
Speakers are readily available down the street so I could return them if they did not fit (major electronics stores like Circuit City and Fry's Electronics carry them)
Specifications of the two are comparable Polk v. CDT-CL-4X:
Sensitivity: 91db v. 90 db
Response freq: 85Hz to 22kHz v. 75 to 20kHz
RMS max Power: 45W v. 60W
Depth: 1 13/16" v. 2"
Price: $80 v. $80 ALTHOUGH Crutchfield will sell you a second pair at half price so if you're shopping for four speakers try Crutchfield.
Performance so far:
I'm very happy with them and just picked up a second pair for my trunk speaker location. MUCH better than stock speaker. I do not blow speakers as often as some of the other users on the board. The last set of (stock) speakers gave me ~30K miles. The Polk speakers are crisp even at 75mph. At 90mph I'm too busy focusing on the road and dont care about music anyway

Cool. Always helps to get more intel on what speakers work.
Let us know how the rear install goes - it's pretty cramped in there but if you can get them to fit I'll probably get some for my top case. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Drake,
I finally got around to installing the Polk DB401 as rear speakers. Bottom line is that I could get it to fit & they sound great.
Here's a couple of minor tweaks needed
1) Cut of two of the four "ears" on the DB401 with tin snips
2) Use a 3" wood screw on one side to hold the speaker in place. Use stock screw on the other side (the speaker base is slightly bigger diameter than stock)
3) The tweater sticks out a bit so the rubber lid of the top case does not engage any one of its three velcros (a half inch of extra space). However the four screws that are designed to do 90% of the work do fit just fine.
Speakers sound awesome. Far better than stock.

Wow. You got a 4" speaker in the backrest? I"m impressed. Trimming ears is nothing.
I'll put this on my To-Do list.
I still have stockers in the back and they do OK but an upgrade won't hurt - and I can compare them to the CDTs in the front.
As for the CDTs, trimming the ribs in the fairing really won't upset the structural integrity of the RT/LT fairing. It cracks just as well with the ribs as it does without. I know from experience.
But it's great that you found a decent speaker with a workable mounting depth - every 16th of an inch really counts on these bikes. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

I have noticed that over time the "blown" left speaker sounds more normal, leading me to believe that it might have been just vibration against some metal that caused the irregular sound.
I do, however miss entire "octaves" or sections of songs....like I can play a song and not hear the entire rhythm guitar section.
I suspect this is the tape deck though and not the speakers. _________________ Bane of your existence since July 2006

FYI: Woofers ETC is having an invetory blowout on these speakers. $39.99 w/ free shipping. I couldn't resist and now have a pair mounted in the top case backrest as well.
(I originally was going to post that I "mounted them in the rear" but that would just get Gwen thinking dirty again. )

Not trying to hijack a thred but can you really hear music over the road/bike/wind noise through your helmet? I was just going to use my MP3 player. with head phones when I was able to get one.
Rt. now it's just no music for me, mine has no radio _________________ In the words of the stones

For the front speakers I had to grind out some of the "structural" ribs and it's still a tight fit. (I put structural in quotues because if you go down the fairing will still crack there. Don't ask me - or my K75Rt - how I know.)
In the rear I was able to trim them down and they fit OK in the backrest. _________________ 93 LT (x2)
