AAAARRRRGGGGHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
.
Alright, who broke into my garage and fixed my ABS??????????
For the last week or so I have been using the black tape over the 2 ABS lights "fix" until I can get a new relay to try.
Today I rode for the first time in 5 days and the lights are no longer blinking- everything is back to functioning as it should (left ABS light blinks until I start rolling then turns off and the red triangle shuts off after I do the front and rear brake light check). AND I HAVE NOT TOUCHED ANYTHING!!!!!!!!! This bike is gonna drive me nuts.
BTW, thanks again Mick for the cross reference (non-BMW) part #. I still intend upon switching it out when I get the new one, because I know at some point the %$@!#@%%!$ ABS will go into fault and the lights will return.
But for now the ABS is staying and will continue to do so IF it behaves.

Sounds like an intermittent connection somewhere....or a bad dream.

OK, now I must be dreaming, but it has turned into a nightmare....
Everything working as it should. Starting late morning Thursday, all is functioning as it should (why, I don't know). After a 10 mile ride to the next town, I make a few stops. Still all working as BMW intended. Get to my office by early afternoon- still OK.
Get done with office hours, start the bike up- still no ABS malfunction lights. But I notice that the center (triangle) light goes out when the ABS light does, WITHOUT TOUCHING either front of rear brake. 1 mile down the road a check of the gauges shows that neither the gas or temp gauge is registering at all. Get home and see that the brake lights aren't working either. Blown fuse #1. Replace it and all is back to normal.
Did a forum search and tomorrow I will look in the area around the rear lightbulb and wiring. Already pulled the right footpeg plate and the wiring looks good- no visual problems.
My question is: could any of the ABS problems I had be related to this??
And are there any other likely areas for a short circuit that would cause the blown fuse?
This bike just might be haunted. Does an exorcism have to be performed in German?

Back to 'normal' as in no failure or the same original failure?

Back to normal as in the bike functioning as BMW intended- NO ABS fault, no malfunction indicators, no flashing lights. After I changed the fuse and checked the rear brake switch wiring, I started it up and ALL was OK.
That is until I start the bike tomorrow morning, at which time I don't what will happen. Almost NOTHING would surprise me now.......(probably shouldn't tempt fate by stating that)
ANY CLUES???
Thanks,

The only suggestion I have is to read the fault codes if it happens again.

One thing to check is the wiring coming from the foot pedal brake switch. Often that wire will get loose and get crimped causing the fuse to blow when the rear brake is used. I had that issue for a while. Its easy to fix however. _________________ 1997 K1100LT
