So, I was checking out Craig's List in the Duluth/Superior Mn. listing
& what do I spy, but a pair of little used $50 CBT's. I've had my heart
set on getting a pair of these clunkers, so I did.
My question to those who have travelled this path before me is,
what's the best product to water-proof, soften, & make these fine
boots last until the next millenium?
All responses accepted... |

The only thing I've found to apply to your boots to make them truly waterproof is 'Totes'.

Totes huh, thanks Don.
I hope that I don't have to resort to those dreaded devices...
Too many bad memories of crow hopping by the roadside trying
to pull Totes over my Bates roadrace boots.
I just can't resist a bargain & the goretex lined Alpinestars didn't
really breathe all that well, so I just had to try the CBT's.
Would Andy G. sell a bad product... _________________ Kent

I used to put Sno-Seal on my GoreTex boots just to give them a bit longer in the rain, worked like a charm and kept the leather like new. The important thing is to steer clear of anything silicon-based. _________________

I put mink oil on my boots and other leathers, then heat I up with a heat gun so it lquifies and gets absorbed. Goes where the water would go. Not perfect but does pretty well - and keeps the leather healthy too. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

There's an old Indian trick with Totes:
Put a plastic grocery bag (sack - for my American friends) on your boot and the rubber slips on (and off) quite easily.
I learned this after tearing both the heels off my 'rubbers' while trying to peel them off my boots.

So Ted,
Since I just finished putting on my first application of Aqua Seal Brand
waterproofing & conditioner that is silicone-based what bad things will
now occur to my new to me CBT's ?
Oh yeah, I bought this product after the nice man at the "House of
Andy" recommended it... _________________ Kent

I thought I'd answer my own question, from the FAQ's at the manufacture's website-
Will silicone hurt the stitching of leather footwear?
No. Silicone and leather are very compatible. However, a number of years ago a few popular silicone "polymer" products had in their formula a solvent which tended to soften the glue in some footwear. Eventually this strong solvent was identified as toxic to leather and people. The manufacturers of those products discontinued using the solvent. This solvent was never used in any Aquaseal® product.
Does Aquaseal condition leather?
So, I guess my purchase was ok after all, time will tell... _________________ Kent

Kent - I use some kind of bees wax stuff - can't put my hands on it right now for the name brand. You put your boots in the oven, heat them up to open the pores, then rub the bees wax in.
Sealed mine up completely - no leaks. Bees wax doesn't hurt the leather, or anything else, still lets the leather breathe. _________________ Jim

Dunno if you get Dubbin over the the pond but it's a traditional saddler's leather care product. I'm away from home right now so can't check the constituents but I think it's pretty much natural stuff. Use on my boots every three months or so. Excellent. _________________ Cheers, Steve H _______________________________________

Looks like the silicon issue has been solved
That said, I would still spring for a tin of sno-seal, stuff is awesome! _________________

I've been using Nikwax, a latex based product I believe. I us their products on leathers and synthetics. Been working great for years. _________________ IBA#42211
