I bought a beautiful 1994K1100RS from a nice person in GA. Just got it home, yes I rode it here, to Milwaukee, WI. Last week Tuesday I was POUNDED from behind by a cager at a traffic light. Hit me hard enough that the bike was launched out from under me and into the pick up truck 8 feet in front of me. Left an imprint of my license plate two feet up the hood of her Honda. Nothing broken on me, 30 years on motorcycles and I've never been caught off guard from behind. Bike towed to dealer, saw them on Saturday, bike looks totaled, only 12,000 miles on it. Stil have my 1981 R100RS, but I GOTTA have another K1100RS!! This is one of the sweetest bikes in memeory. Now you have the history & why I joined up with this group. I'm also NEW to K's.
Looking for a replacement for my 94. I've got a 93 & a 95 scoped out. The 93 is closer to home, less'n 300 miles, the 95 is far 2,000 +. So except for the ABS sysems, are the bikes fairly identical?
I GOTTA HAVE ANOTHER K1100RS !! _________________ 1993 K1100RS that I'd rather be riding FAST!

Really only the ABS. ABS II is supposedly better but I think the ABS I is easier to bleed and perform spline lubes on. ABS I probably weighs a pound or two more though.
The later bikes also have an adjustable brake lever. IMO, this is actually a downgrade - on my 94 RS one of the first things I did was get rid of that and replace it with an earlier non-adjustable one.
They also have different wiring harness connectors which makes finding parts for the earlier bikes a bit easier as they share many components with the other earlier Ks.
In the end, I prefer the 93 and earlier but there really isn't a material difference.
Pick the bike which has the better color/condition/price. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Sorry to hear about the wreck, we were all glad to hear you came out OK. As far as 93 vs. 95, they are all good bikes, although I prefer the ABS II. In my experience, the ABS II system is less prone to ABS brain failure. Also 94 and up shaft splines have improved metallurgy. Good luck bike shopping, hope you get one of the good ones |

Those are good points. Is the spline thing actually officially documented somehwere? Just curious.
Also, the 93 and earlier have a 33A alternator. This is fine unless you want to add a pair of driving/fog 55W lights - the 33A alternator can't handle that. But it's an easy upgrade and the 50A units run about $150 used. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

I'll echo that, There, but for the grace of God go I, Similarly, I agree that ABS 2 is far more reliable electrically, also it is better when it is working & I have never had any trouble bleeding.
I am on my third K11 (91, 95 & now a 97) IMNSHO The ABS2 bikes are better, except for the smaller battery, which only really matters If one camps. The only thing I miss between the 95 & the 97 is the throttle clamp screw, which I cured by fitting an O ring between the RHS grip & the switch block.

On my spline lube with ABS 2 I did not have to remove the whole ABS 2 unit but I did have to remove the lines so I could lift it up and hang it out of the way. As for bleeding the brakes I have done it a couple of times and it is pretty easy. _________________ Rich

Not 100% sure about this one Duck. I have a 1993 and all of the work records. I have the 50A unit, but there is no record of the alternator ever being replaced. Maybe I got a late 93 and BMW did there infamous "use up old parts until they are gone" deal and I got lucky. Dunno, either way its easy enough to check which is which. _________________ 1997 K1100LT

So your alternator has a black plastic cover on the back of it?
The ETK says used from 9/92. Of course you can check your manufacuring date here:
http://www.bmw-z1.com/VIN/VINdecode-e.cgi
According ot the VIN, my bike was built in 10/92 but it had the old 33A unit. Shows how accurate the ETK is.
As for the "throw in what we've got" aproach at the factory. I don't think that works with the alternator as it has different wiring connectors so your bike would also most likely have to have the 94+ wiring harness.
I've also seen 93 LTs (early I assume) that have K100RS4V peg plates instead of the ones my bikes have. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Bever mind, they never put a 33A alternator in the RS.
But hte ETK is still wrong about my LT. _________________ 93 LT (x2)
