OK, wrong forum, but I just went over to the dark side (the K1200 one that is ) and I got lots of questions. The folks over at the BMW superbike forum don't seem to be very helpful. I just bought a 99 K1200RS with 50,000 miles on it for $3900, which I thought was a steal, but it's got a couple of (hopefully minor) issues. The ABS light keeps flashing (and the guy says it has a new battery), the temp gauge doesn't work and it needs a new rear tire. Other than that, everything seems OK. The engine did seem to make a rather clunky noise in idle when just started up cold, that goes away when it warms up. Is that normal? Also, the rear drive has a slight 'clunk' sometimes when changing gears. My K1100 doesn't do that. The K1200 doesn't require a 50,000 mile spline lube like the K1100 does it? God, I hope not. _________________ Silk Blue '94 K 1100 RS. |

I'm going to add a tuppence here..
I did some training with a guy who had an 03 K1200RS while I was on my old K100RT. One thing I noticed about the K12 was that it was NOISY - at idle especially. It was low mileage and seemed to be in perfect order, but it outshone my old K as far as knocks and rattles went, by a long chalk.
Obviously this varies from bike to bike, but my advice is don't worry about rumblings and rattles from the engine, look at it as solid evidence of overengineering _________________ 1992 K1100RS - Red and gold. |

I'm a member of the site listed below but have become very inactive as they seem to have gone mainly K1200 minded so it maybe useful to have a read through for you.

Thanks for the replies, guys. I'll look into these sites. I've been reading a little bit more on the K1200 and it does seem to be a bit noisy in idle. Don't know what would cause that, the timing chain maybe? Oh, and duck: you'll get yer pichers, but I haven't even taken posession of the bike yet, so patience, please _________________ Silk Blue '94 K 1100 RS. |
