Does anyone know of a place to buy BMW oil on line?

Why do you want BMW oil? You're just paying extra for the roundel on the bottle. All of it is just rebranded oil from the same oil companies. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Probably lubricate it.
The bikes we ride are pretty much bulletproof. What oil you use probably isn't a big consderation unless you plan on riding it until the fariing is ready to fall of.
And on any engine, changing the oil at approriate intervals is usually more important than what oil you use - esepcially these days. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Popping leaks? I started using Mobil 1 15W50 at 47500 miles and it has been running great. No leaks at all. In fact, the first thing I did when I got my K1200 was put Mobil 1 in it. Funny story: the BMW tech at the dealer in Salt Lake City told me I should put only oil that was designed for motorcycles in it. I argued that that might be true for most motorcycles, since the engine and the transmission share the oil. Not in the BMW, though. Engine oil only for the engine, transmission oil for the tranny. He hesitated for a bit, but then still stuck with his story. So who was right? _________________ Silk Blue '94 K 1100 RS. |

You are
It is the shear forces in the gearbox which literally chew up the complex molecular chains in modern lightweight oils - that is why EP oils exist.
Modern motorcycle oils have two duties - crank/cam lubrication and handling the crushing pressure in the gearbox as the cog faces come together.
They are a compromise, and are priced high to fool the punters.
The K unit uses the same layout as a motorcar has for the past 90 years, and you choose the oil according to it's purpose.
I use Motul semi-synth in the block, and Motul 3000 fully synth EP 80 GL5 in the gearbox - lovely
Beware that many cheap semi-synths have < 10% of synthetic by volume, and are a complete rip-off.
A quality semi-synth should be around 50/50 by volume, and is probably the best compromise.
A branded dino oil, changed at half distance will serve you well, it is what the factory used in 1994 _________________ C1 200 (2001)

FD what Oil would be best a 20/50 15/40? any aftermarket filter number to look for in the bosch? Napa auto parts sells them, after syncing the throttlebodys on my K1100 she ran so good I had a guy ask if I would sell her and I told him let me think about it, found the 02-K12LT with 21000 on it and sold the K1100 the next day, been nothing but happy with the K12 just to many things to play with wile I'm riding, Now I got a lot to learn about the K12
thanks for your time and help

I have to say I always use Halfords oils for everything!
I have put semi synthetic 10w40 in there and all seems good
As far as filters go i use Mahle ones as a rule. |

Rover
Not seen that kind of filter or Oil here in the US? My issue here is the BMW dealer is so damn High on his Prices, I really don't want to buy from him If I can help it, so finding a good quality Oil filter and Buying Oil from my area auto parts shop is How I deal with the cost in a cheaper wayall my other Motorcycles run well on auto Oils never had any Problems using it. I was hoping to find some Part numbers for the Bosch filter and any other that could be used in the K12. thanks for your input

Halfords is a UK chain of general parts stores so unlikely to see it in the US
I'd suggest you look in your manual to see how your local climate compares to its chart I use 10w40 but then 26 centigrade is a hot day here!
As far as Mahle filters go try
CARQUEST Auto Parts
3212 Wall Ave
Ogden, UT 84401
Phone: (801) 393-0883
No idea obviously if these filters are stocked there or able to be ordered though i can tell you they make the filters for BM!!
The part number is OC91
Happy shopping!!! |
