Folks
At the time of the ABS II change, the rear differential rod (tie-bar) changed from a nice, simple alloy casting to an ugly pressed metal stamping.
Made up from two stamped U sections, they are bonded together at the front bushing.
I have the ABS II, and the stamped bar is badly corroded on the inner faces of the U sections.
Grit blasting would be awkward, and may damage the bonded bush.
I picked up a cast tie-bar with one of the project gearboxes, and it would look a whole lot better.
Is there a reason why BMW switched from the simple casting to the stamped item ?
Answers on a postcard, please _________________ C1 200 (2001)

"Because it's cheaper" would be my first guess.
BTW, mine is ABS I and has the crappy stamped steel tie-bar. _________________ '93 K1100RS

Yeah, that had occurred to me, but I was more concerned about faulty parts, recalls etc.
The alloy arm has been relacquered, and is baking as we speak _________________ C1 200 (2001)

I retro fitted the alloy arm to my LT as I reckon it looks better. I can't remember the research I did before changing it but I know it fitted before I purchased it, I beleive the one I have is from an RS and when checked on the parts system proved to be interchangable. All I did with my bar was clean it with emery tape and steel wool then sprayed it with clear laquer from the local car parts shop, it loks a hell of a lot better. _________________ Fat Ba***d with a K1100LTse

Could be something to do with the sweet mountain rain you guys enjoy
We get the toxic effluent of Chernobyl blowing in every day from the North Sea, plus the 100 tons of Urea our councils spread on the roads every winter to minimise the effects of frost or ice (and associated insurance claims ) _________________ C1 200 (2001)

No connection to me, simple coincidence. _________________ C1 200 (2001)

Getting ready for a touring holiday next week, I have commenced the ritual cleaning and fettling process
To check coolant hoses, I dropped the fairing lowers.
It had not occurred to me before, but my crashbars have built-in lamp brackets, and appear significantly wider than standard ?
There have been several threads, and many worthy efforts to fabricate lamp brackets - these seem to have great potential ?.
Are they police spec bars - I am curious how these came to be fitted to a bog standard civillian K11 LT.
They are genuine BMW, and are stamped with the roundel plus part #
Right 4671 2 315 228
Left 4671 2 303 677
The left one fits directly to the sump with two bolts (no brackets), whilst the right one has a small offset bracket at the rear.
I suspect that there may be some isolating rubber bushes missing, but I cannot find these bars, or anything similar on the fiche sites.
Has anyone come across these wider crashbars before, and can advise on correct fitting please

They're TIC bars - off the police "TIC" bikes, designed for the terrible flashing lights on the Ks used for law enforcement (here in NZ, Australia, some European too). Had a set on my first K100RT and they're great in a low-speed drop (eg when putting on the stand) - they're wider and protect the mirrors... On my 100RT, on falling over it would end up resting on the wheels, the crashbar and the rear indicator, no pressure impact on the fairing/mirror.
