Brian T. xxxxxxxx, 22, of xxx Moore Drive, was killed when his 2002 Harley Davidson left the roadway at about 12:32 a.m. State police did not release information about whether Phillips crashed into something, but said the accident is still under investigation. Phillips was not wearing a helmet, according to police.
The passenger on the motorcycle, Amanda xxxxxx, 20, of xxx Vernon St. in Manchester, was moderately injured and taken to Charlotte Hungerford Hospital in Torrington, police said. Boulet was wearing a helmet, according to police.
Strong woman to hopefully be smart enough to protect her coconut. I get so frustrated when I see anyone with no helmet. _________________ "Badges? We don't need no stinking badges"!

Hard to believe that with all the research out there someone would willingly go without a helmet.
I think for some it's more about the having the freedom to choose rather than be told what to do. _________________ Bane of your existence since July 2006

I enjoy riding without a helmet. And I'm fully aware of the risks. BFD.
Given that you're 37 times more likely to suffer a fatality on a motorcycle per mile traveled, if you actually cared about your own safety you wouldn't get near a motorcycle in the first place. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

If you don't have a windshield in front of you, a helmet is invaluable even if it just protects against bug hits to your head/face. OUCH.
Given Cathy's work (Occupational Therapist), she has seen enough head injuries to convince anyone to protect their melon.
We are the "live free or die" state- adults aren't even required to wear seatbelts here (only state out of 50). So most folks don't wear helmets here.
I couldn't even think of going out on the bike bareheaded.

Sorry but I get tired of people who choose to ride motorcycles preaching about safety when they have chosen one of the more dangerous things to do as a hobby.
I see much irony in that.

Funny thing fate, God's will, Karma, or what ever you believe guides your future.
I've seen riding friends loose large pieces of flesh & bone in high speed get off's and attended to them as best I could. Heads were fine in the helmet, but one in particular I remember got crippled. No helmet, head was AOK at a 100 plus total off, but left heel & most of his arch along with the boot got munched be a culvert. Took a few years, he can't walk of stand very long of far, but he IS riding again.
Another that chnaged my life in 1984 was tragic. Hot hard left hander, saw a couple get in WAY to fast. I pulled up hard but was riding solo. They shot off the road, sailed over a ditch, stayed upright, sheared off a flag pole, this crushed his clavical & shattered his left arm, then they ran into a field stone wall at darn near 50MPH. She was good till then. Blunt force trama & an errant tree root that broke her neck ended her ride forever.
We saved him!!!!! Patched him up, kept him alive till medics arrived & transported him. Helmets did not save them. His grief over the loss of his spouse caused him to make a decsion to end his life on his own, by him self. We tried to save him through this too & failed. That experience changed my life forever, and because of it, when ever I donate blood, platelets, plasma or what ever the Southeast WI blood center wants that week, I think of him, and her and the fragility of our existance.
Of my own special story, I got creamed from behind by a four door Honda that caught me off gaurd & totalled a BEAUTIFUL 1994 Red K1100RS that I had just got home from Georgia! this happened in April of this year. The armor jacket save my elbow from shattering, the spine protector & back padding helped save my back, helmet NEVER got a scratch!!!! WTH ???? Go figure. Replaced with a 93 K1100RS that is stronger but not quite like I like it yet. Very soon to be complete.
Anyway's if ya read this far, you know a few things already.
#1: I can't type worth beans.
#2: You love life & love to ride, me too!
#3: You know how to hedge the odds in your favor.
#4: There is NO magic bullet that can save your @$$
#5: Share all you can with everyone you can, just not your helmet or gear.
#6: Make your own choices & always allow others to do the same. Ya just gotta give em' the chance to ride free their way.
Peace & free riding to all! _________________ 1993 K1100RS that I'd rather be riding FAST!

The fact that there are inherent risks in motorcycling does not lessen the importance of a helmet as a safety device. _________________ 2000 R1100RT

True dat. However, getting helmet lectures from people who choose to ride is analogous to those same people being told how stupid they are by non-riders to ride a motorcycle in the first place.
Everyone one has different levels of risk tolerance. Of all people, people who choose to ride should understand that and not preach to others or assume others are stupid, ignorant, or whatever simply because they choose to ride without a helmet. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Certainly not, but nor can it allow infringment of an individuals choice to wear or not to wear. _________________ 1993 K1100RS that I'd rather be riding FAST!

As long as any cost from someone not wearing a helmet IS NOT passed on to others.
Kind of when tourists to our area (White Mountains of NH) decide to "hike" up Mt Lafayette in sneakers and a thin jacket in June and end up needing to be rescued. There are costs there that are spread amount the surrounding towns- although in some areas the stupid are actually being billed for their rescue. _________________ John & Cathy

That's what taxes are for.
God help us all if anytime assistance or extroidinary care is required that the individual requiring same goes bankrupt for the costs due to new legislation or greater restrictions.
Sure, does not seem fair that we all pay for the unfortunate few.
But then freedom is never really free, EVER! _________________ 1993 K1100RS that I'd rather be riding FAST!

I keep mine in my tent when camping in bear country. If I hear Mama Bear snorting around, I put the lid on and hope it keeps my pudgy mug from getting scratched too badly by her diggers. _________________ tlp

I don't hink your head will fit in a bear's mouth. Maybe a polar bear - the ones who drink Coke and cry on AlGore's shoulder. _________________ 93 LT (x2)
