| From Seattle to Spencer, Idaho...that's as far as I went when the shift lever failed Yesterday at Noon. In a pack of 5 bikes, we were about 200 miles short of Jackson, Wyoming. My friend and I switched bikes for a while, I rode his K1200RS and he rode my K11. While riding down I-15 in Idaho he shifted down to 4th gear to make a pass and that's when it broke. We suspect the key fastener, which is inside the transmission, disengaged from the lever shaft. It was stuck in 4th, which is better than being stuck in 3rd or lower. I rode it home running mostly at 80 MPH which equated to 6K RPM's in 4th. Anyway, I did get to tear up my tires on hundreds of miles of twisties, rarely did we ride an interstate until Dillon, Idaho. My other friend, who rides an FJR, offered to escort me back home since we didn't know if my bike would "grenade". We will try to make another trip out that way again, lots to great roads with very low traffic through the Rockies! |

Thanks Drake and Jim!
I dread pulling my bike apart to get to a "$3 part", but recently I've noticed a "chug-chug" sound from what I think are worn out clutch pressure plates. I'm told new ones are $300! Ouch! Although I'll feel a lot better on my next ride knowing the entire tranny will be rebuilt and have fresh seals.
Jim, I didn't know for sure our route would take us through Hells Canyon. However, on Tuesday morning we ran through Hell and enjoyed the tight turns...although could have done without the 300' shear drop-offs. Funny that guard rails were not installed at the most treacherous edges of that road near the dam.
Anyhow, filmed most of it with my bullet cam mounted below my K11 headlight. Managed to film a gofer dashing accross the road when I was running a buck thirty. The (lucky) gofer was about 15' away from where my front tire was about to cross in a split second. |

Your bike still has less than 50k, right? I doubt you need cltuch pressure plates. Maybe the friction plate - $125ish new.
Is your clutch slipping? _________________ 93 LT (x2)

My bike has 64k. And the clutch is not slipping. Beyond the obvious shift linkage failure, there seems to be something else wrong with the tranny or clutch system. In nuetral there is a "chug-chug" sound that occurs until the clutch is disengaged. That issue started a year ago at about 60k. I'd like to discuss this in detail with you, I'll try to call your house #. |
