The Honda scoot my brother's friend gave to me last summer. I probably put $300-350 into it with two years of registration, new tires, filters, etc... Then the carb was acting crappy so I had to dump $75 for a good used one on FleaBay. Much cheaper and easier than doing it myself or paying a shop.
Sold it for $700. Was gonna sell it for $600 last year but gas has driven demand up lately from what I've seen on Craig's List.
And after taking the thing out for a few rides last summer I knew I wasn't going to ride it anymore. An 80cc scoot at 35 mph is downright scary compared to a K at 100 - seriously.
Now what I need to find is a decent dual sport. Saw a 97 DR350 on Craig's List for $950 but the seller never responded to my email so I figure it's already been sold.
Gonna have to start some serious lurking over at the ADVrider Flea Market.

Get a KTM or a plated XR650R Drake.
Either will cause a quick shorts change.
Ever ridden serious dirt before?

I'm happy with the old DR650.
The '90 is a kicker only, but once you get the process down, even an old guy (like me) can get it started pretty quickly.
The DR is cheap, a true dual-sport (cushioned-drive sprocket), forgiving suspension.
It cruises very well at 75mph with stock-sprocks
A perfect alter-ego to an RS!

Never ridden serious dirt before. I've played with enduros though. Just looking for something to maybe do some Forest Service road and similar stuff. Not really thinking about "serious" dirt, jumping or wheelies.
Whatever I get will be plated and street legal.
I'm thinking a DR350 or DR400 will be enough for my needs. Just need something that'll do 70 comfortably. If I want to go faster or go far I'll ride a K.

Strange thing is that the lower cc enduros are actually more hyper and dirt worthy.
Smaller and lighter sure, but with your inseam I would be looking at a 650. Plus 70mph on a 400? Ugh.
And who are you friggin kidding? You will be doing wheelies in no time.

Keep in mind while I do not own one, I have done extensive research as my next bike will be a dualie.
Toss up between:
Plated XR650R. Keep in mind this bike is different than the XR650L.
The XRR is basically the largest dirt bike made for the road.
Can be had for around 3k used.....early-mid 2000 model.
Pros:
Blisteringly fast. Wheelies in first 3 gears easy, no mods needed
tears it up off road
bulletproof honda engine
stock suspension is decent
front end is stiff
Easy to fix and maintain
Great dealer support
Cons:
eats rear tires
Not that comfy on road compared to other dualies like the DR or KLR.
begging for tickets
OR
KTM Duke II.
Supermoto, offroader, hooligan bike.
Pros:
Best looking
sickeningly fast
fun on road or off
Cons:
begging for tickets
sparse dealer support
maintenance queen compared to the other Japanese dualies.
Can be had for around the same price, if not a bit more.

That ain't a CON in my book. Torque is NEVER a bad thing.
After I finsh and sell my K75S-paralever and can dump what I get for it on a dualie, we're gonna have to have a phone chat.

Me too man, me too.
Thing is, I made my wife a promise....no more bikes until we buy a house.
Way it looks now that might be 5 years or so. 
However, she did not stipulate what country the house was in.....houses in Brazil can go for 50k or so.

OTG:
What are your pros/cons for the DR650? From what little research I've done that seems to be a good bang for the buck.
The reason I was looking at the DR400 was that I wanted to stay as light as possilbe while still be able to cruise at 70. Is the DR400 too small for that?

Yes. The 400 will be screaming at 70.
The DR650 is a fine bike, but not built for a guy my size.
It's generally regarded as a bit smaller and thinner, with a slightly lower seat height.
You would have better luck.
Generally the big 3 rank like this:
Honda XR650R/L Best in dirt, worst in road, pretty light. Powerful. Least expensive to crash.
Suzuki DR650 best compromise of both. Lightest bike, middle of the road power.
Kawasaki KLR 650 best road, so-so dirt, heaviest bike. Slow and methodical. Most expensive to crash.

Yeah, though not as extensive as yours, my research led me to the conclusion that a DR650 would be the way to go. Thanks for your input.

Can't go wrong with any of them really.
Just pick the one that suits your riding style the best.
Personally I would much rather have better dirt manners forgoing road comfort.
