He said to pick up a new K+N air filter and soak the shit out of it in motor oil and pop it in there.....he claims it will richen up the extremely lean-running K.

you're not starting another K&N thread, are you??? I hope not.

How often do you have to change your air filter? How well does your bike run? How long do you want it to last?

You can get an air filter for less than $40.00 online. The BMW air filter does a better job of filtering than K&N. Almost everyone who has switched to K&N has switched back to a stock filter.

I think the point was the oil, not the brand of filter.

well, the K&N is designed to be used with oil. I don't think I'll be soaking my new BMW filter...

This I did not know.

Why did most riders switch back to stock?

I was wondering why it was about the oil... You have to use filter oil with a K&N. I had a K&N on one of my bikes - a Yamaha. It was a RPITA.

not just riders - cage drivers, too. The K&N is good for race vehicles - 'cause they rebuild the engines all the time. The K&N does not filter as well as your stock filter. If you don't mind getting a bunch of crap in your engine, use a K&N. If you want your engine to last, use a stock filter.

The K&N probably catches as much of the big stuff as your stock filter, but lets the little stuff through. You'd probably have to clean and oil a K&N as often as you have to deal with your stock filter.

You don't have to change - or clean your stock filter very often. I pull the filter out and blow it out with the air gun, then stick it back in. You don't even need a new one once a year - unless you're a year round iron butt maniac - maybe.

Have you tried changing your filter yet? You either have to pull some of the bodywork off, or you have to hold your mouth just right. It isn't easy. I think it would be a TPIA to pull a K&N out to clean it and stick it back in all the time.

I think what he's saying is that an oil soaked filter will restrict air flow.

Good, honest BMW non-stealer mechanics around here are about as rare as Johnny eating Tofu. In fact the are 2 on Long Island that I know of.

Something as trivial as that is nowhere near enough to scare me away, he was just trying to make a suggestion as to make my bike run a little richer in light of my destroyed plugs.

I'm sorry but if someone tells you to enrich the fuel miixture by soaking the air filter in motor oil the then he has sniffed a few too many gas fumes if you ask me. Kinda gives you an idea as to why he's so "affordable," doesn't it?"

Couple of questions about this technique

"Soak the shit out of it". Do you let it drain off before placing it in the airbox or put it in dripping wet??

If this oil-logged filter helps the engine when you first run it, that condition will soon change and your lean situation will return. The oil will be rapidly sucked out of the filter and the engine will be back to running lean very quickly.

The subject of K&N filters is regularly brought up on turbo-diesel forums and rapidly dismissed. The manufacturer states that they flow more air- always giving some "up to xx% more". The way that happens is to filter LESS.
Not in my engine, you don't.

i read somewhere that you can take the air box off and fix a cone type filter to the air inlet... it would free up the under tank so hot air would dissipate better reducing the hot tank and the roast and the cone filter moved lotts o air for better performance...

i didnt book mark the thread on another forum and now i cant find it... there was photos and all... looked to be very effective...

anyone know of this mod...

I call bullshit on that one:

a) You want the coldest air intake possible. Having a cone behind the raditor that sucks in HOT air will decrease performance.

b) the BMW filter is the best and is oversized for a 1.1 liter engine. Don Eilenberger ran dynos on a K100 with K&N, OEM, OEM half covered with Saran wrap and no filter - no change in HP.

c) any aftermarket cone filter (like K&N) will let more crap through

Micki checking in- are you surprised I read tech too?

You would be surprised how often JO eats Tofu- it's our protein of choice in Thai food since they tend to cook all the flavor and texture out of real meat. JO likes his Tofu fried. Very Happy
