During a recent trip my '94 RS burned about 1 quart of 20 w 50 motor oil about every 750 miles. The bike has 26k miles. Is this normal consumption? I use BMW dino oil. Would a switch to synthetic reduce consumption?

It's not shown in the ETK but K bikes have a secret oil hiding reservoir which refills the oil sump at random intervals. My RS seems to unburn oil every now and then.

Sadly some of them drink it.

However: Use of nice, say Silkolene for instance, oil, can dramatically reduce consumption.

I went from 1l per 1000miles down to 500ml per 1000miles by stringently sticking to the same, quality oil when topping up from the last change, instead of sticking any old crap in. YMMV, but if you take this advice, I can almost guarantee an improvement.

OK- this coincidence is spooky- just today I experienced a similar situ.

Just a couple of weeks ago I was surprised to check and see that oil consumption was down to 1/2 quart for 1500 miles (previously it had been 1500 miles/quart).
Today I checked and it needed 1/2 quart for the past 750 miles.

So for one period it had decreased by 50% but the consumption is now right back to where it had perviously been. Sad

Oh well- a mind of its own......

Hence my comment above about K bikes hiding oil and putting it back in. And you guys thought I was joking.

Between my problem with the ABS that "self healed" and now this changing oil consumption situation I am starting to believe that a K is capable of ANYTHING- good or bad.

My apologies, Mr. Duck, for doubting your wisdom. Now- what does your crystal ball say about the future of crude oil prices?

Actually I have named it Hades since it is a really hot place.

So perhaps its weird behavior is demonic possession??

FD, since you are wise in all sorts of things, can you perform an exorcism via the internet?

You guys make me feel good. My 60K or so K11 engine uses about 3/4 quart in 5000 miles.

I can't even guess how much oil I'll see in the sight glass - and you think I can prognosticate oil futures? Very Happy

What's Silkolene, an additive in oil? I use BMW 20 w 50. Does it contain Silkolene?

it would be interesting to see how the relitive heat & humidity is affecting the consumption.

my aircraft would blow out alot of oil in the humid summer days.

My oil consumption drops by half in the cold weather.

Another reason I love riding when it's brisk out.

Plus it makes the bike pretty much as fast as it can be.

I'm thinking about opening the SW and looking at the valves and rings.

I'm burning a qt/ 1000 miles and looks like Puff the Magic dragon from behind. That's up from a pt/ 3000 miles.

Mine has 170,000+ miles on it.

If I do, I'll post the pics, story and finding over in my Shop Whore thread.

I can see the heat of summer making engines run hotter but the humidity shouldn't have any affect since our engines cool by heat transfer from the radiator, not evaporation like on our skin.

My oil consumption is up in the heat. Seems I'm topping off every few hundred miles.

Yeah, that'd be really nice.. Thanks for being honest - sadly this seems to happen sometimes. Keep us posted!

Many K1100s use excessive quantities of oil. A few of them, after using it long enough, will build so much sticky black carbon that they keep an exhaust valve from closing and the valve burns. If your bike is using a lot of oil, remove the exhaust system and inspect the ports. If you find a blackened exhaust port, you may want to take preventative measures.

Unfortunately, these "measures" require engine disassembly.

A Blast at 130mph turns the inside of my exhaust white, and presumably burns any crud off.. Well, any sustained period of riding over 8k RPM will do the trick.
