K1100LT with RS Rear Wheel

Hi there,

Have picked up a lot of good advice off this site in the past few months, so thought I'd register and give back some info.

Just managed to get a R1100 rear off ebay for £62 (I think that's about $120), with an OK bridgestone 020 160/60ZR18. It was difficult to get it fitted - jammed between the abs ring and the exhaust - had to loosen the exhaust mount and lever it in. Also had to remove the rear caliper. However, the wheel and bolts then fitted perfectly. The wheel sits about 5mm offset to the exhaust, but this seems the same as any K1100RS I've seen.

Following various posts I decided to keep the standard front wheel but fit a 110/80ZR18 bridgestone 021.

Not managed to ride it yet as I'm looking after the kids for the weekend with the wife away, but sunday night I'll give it a spin and report back.

By the way, put some Avon Azaro/Storms on last year and they gave a bad weave - the bike shop swapped them to Macadams for no charge! They must know something...

I just put a K1100RS rear(same as the R11RS rear) and Pilot Road 2 radials on my LT. Seems to work just fine.

The Pilot Road 2 front is a tad squirrelly at low speed but that seems to be mellowing some with miles. I think dropping the front pressure a few pounds will help on that issue.

Life is much easier with an aftermarket exhaust (on both the RS and LT with wide rear.) That way you can just remove the exhaust can to get the wheel on and off easily.

I have BT 021's on my RS and love them, had to renew the front just after i bought the bike as it was to the wear limits and had also worn on the softer compound and made two distinct ridges on the tyre, it did feel like it wanted to drop into corners, after the new one was fitted it felt sooooo much better, grip that inspires you to corner hard as hell without any worries and totally stable at all speeds, from 1 to 145mph (so far) and never a hint of a wobble.
The rear is now getting near the limit so will be replacing it soon with another 021.
After riding home the other day hitting 120 on the motorway for about 5 miles for some reason i put my hand on the rear, felt like there was glue on it!!!!!

Just taken the bike for a 30 mile spin and all seemed well. Very stable at all speeds, but I was very cautious on the corners what with the new front tyre. The front did seem to try to 'turn' the bars into the corners a bit more than I was used to, but no worse than a brand new R1150RT did when I test rode it.

The front Bridgestone 021 is the right size (110/80ZR18) for the standard front of the LT but it does seem to have quite a 'U' shaped profile - there's no way that you could get to the edge unless it was about to go shiny side down! If all continues to look good I'll take it in for a new 021 for the back as the one that came on the ebay wheel is a bit squared off.

No probs getting it onto the centre stand either, as one other person had reported on the RS rear wheel.

That shouldn't be an issue. The difference between the LT and RS wheels with tires mounted is a bout 1%. (I used a tire size calculation web page before I did the changeover.)

Been out for a full speed much longer ride today, and the new wheel and radial tyres are fantastic. Rock steady at all speeds and no more weaving on high-speed corners.

I'd recommend that anyone with a K1100LT go out and find a R1100 or K1100RS rear wheel and then fit some decent radial tyres.

I think it's mostly due to going from bias to radial. When I ran Azaros on my LT with a stock LT rear wheel last year it was rock solid. I did the RS rear swap mostly for cosmetic reasons. (And it was "free" since I a spare RS rear laying around. Very Happy )
