Hi All
As you know I had a "coming together" with a Van on thursday resulting in the camchain being snapped at fairly high revs, i think as high as 8000rpm but not too sure (was too busy thinking this is going to hurt to look but was in first gear full throttle trying to get out of the way)
Question is what sort of engine damage should i expect?
I realise there will be bent valves but is it common to have holed piston's, broken cams and cam caps if the chain snaps.
Reason i ask is im thinking of trying to get salvage on the bike and Im trying to work out if the engine can be repaired or if im better off getting a replacement unit.
Forks and front wheel have definatly gone but now think the frame is ok, had a look and cant see any cracking paint or stress marks on it.
I can get forks and a wheel fairly cheaply off Ebay or at a breakers, bellypan will need replacing but its the engine repair costs that worry me.
Rob

My .02:

In the end I suspect finding a good used engine would involve less time, money, effort and risk.

Only an expert can tell if a frame is straight. You were there though and know how hard the hit was and what the bike went through so...

My salvage K11 engine was put in the junkyard with just about the same situation as yours. It had four bent valves, and when the camchain broke, it broke the nose of the cam that is under the exhaust sprocket. The head was also cracked at the lower edge of the cam chain run.

There are good used engines available, but be wary of the claimed mileage. If it is just sitting a bench, there may be no certain way to verify that, except for the word of the salvage people.

I was going to use the engine as is, until I decided to check valve clearances and had about 1/4 inch of clearance on two of them. So started the saga.
