Having ridden both LT and RS, it has to be said that the riding position is the main difference. Getting on my old K100RT feels like a chesterfield armchair, but the handling is more remote. Horses for courses. _________________ 1992 K1100RS - Red and gold. |

RS vs' LT:
As mentioned, riding position.
The LT weighs about 50 pounds more and is more topheavy. It also provides more protection from the elements. It has a 32:11 final drive while the RS has a 31:11 final drive. All of those things make the LT slower than the RS. Factory spec 0-60 is 4.3 seconds for the LT and 3.8 for the RS. Top speed for LT 130mph. Top speed for RS 136mph.
The RS seems to put out a little more heat to the rider.
The frames are not the same, The LT has the pull-out handle for putting the bike on the centerstand while on the RS you grab the frame rail.
I've never measured my bikes but the RS certainly SEEMS to ride lower. Could be the different frames, riding position or lower CoG. Forks, brakes, drive train, rear shock are all identical.
For lane-splitting width they're probably pretty close. However, the LT mirrors are higher so this can make life easier when splitting among smaller, lower cars as your mirrors are above the car mirrors. Splitting among SUVs and pickups the RS mirrors are better since they're lower. I've done a fair amount of lane-splitting on both bikes and don't see that either has a clear edge over the other.
The RS can be ridden more agressively but on the other hand the LT is no slouch.
The LT has music at your fingertips. On the RS I wear an MP3 player on my belt with earbuds.
Though the manual says bias ply - the LT runs MUCH better on radials.
This doesn't apply to the UK but the best part of the LT is that it's great for riding with a half or no helmet.
Moving from an RS to an LT, you might find the topheaviness of the LT a bit awkward at low speed at first but you do get used to it. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Well the more I ride the ST1300 the more convinced I am I want another K, even though my K was 12 years old the ride and feeling was so much better than the Pan is, She would pull from 30mph in top up hill without complaining, the Pan justs snatches rattles and says no even though it is 200cc's bigger. Going to keep looking for an RS but might go for an LT if i can't find a decent RS.
Besides I would miss these forums I bet the ST forums are stuck up anyway

Thanks Flying Duck, I have sort of got used to the size of the Pan now and guess that an LT would be about the same, just have to be a bit more careful when filtering through 3 lanes of traffic jams.
Looked at a site with parts diagrams and the LT & RS frames are the same apart from the handle as you said, the forks appear to have the same part number so ride height must be down to the different wheel/tyre (sorry tire) sizes and handle bars.
Top speed wise, My K was a 16valve and I have had it to 145mph (on satnav & speedo) when sitting bolt upright but to be honest not too worried if the LT is a bit slower although the UK ones do have the exact same gear/final drive ratio's, only the American ones differ, suppose coz you have more longer straighter roads that us Brits
Do LT's normally come with radios fitted? that would save having the MP3 in my topbox wired to the autocom.
Do they also come with electric screens as standard, I have been using the one on the Pan a fair bit (mainly to stop my fag burning away too quickly )

At leaastrin the US I think all Lts have a radio. I'ts only AM/FM cassette. I reaaplced mine with an MP3 CD player and marine remote on thee handlebars. I get 100s of songs per CD and itt only skips on washboard or really nasty roads.
Electric windscreen is standard. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

I think that the LT's came in 3 option packages.
My '97 was a basic-basic. No radio, no heated grips, no engine guards, no throttle lock, no alarm system.
It did come with basic black hard cases.
The '96 was set up with more. Factory radio w/rear wiring, heated grips, engine guards, throttle lock, color matched hard case covers.
What it didn't have was the rear stereo speaker setup for the top case, and no alarm system. _________________ Ride safe.

Hi all.
Just an update for you, Had the insurance inspector over today and the repair cost is £6800 so she is a total loss He valued her at £2350 but is going to look at that figure to see if it can be raised, she has had £1000 worth of work done since i have had her, he said the salvage is £345 so im not sure i will have her as salvage.
Now I have to find another bike, I think I am going to go for an LT as RS's are like rocking horse poo at the moment.
I have found one i am interested in but its in Ireland and would mean a 450 mile ride home from collecting it, still should be a good shakedown ride.
Will let you know what i decide and will post a few piccies of my new K when i get her!

The one i am looking at is ex police (K1100LTIC) but has had one owner since then, been resprayed, is dual seat, full BMW colour coded luggage & spec etc, the history includes all the rides he did whilst touring europe and the eastern block.
What tends to be the problems with ExPolice???

I think they tend to be beat to hell with maintenance that is less than privately owned. _________________ Bane of your existence since July 2006

Bargepole.
Please, look for one privately owned from new. They look like shit (old style sidepanels etc); they have holes drilled everywhere; unless the clutch has been replaced recently, that'll be on the horizon soon; If the windscreen works it'll be a miracle; they all seem to guzzle oil even more than the worst non "IC" examples; seat will be shit, unless the owner bought something extremely good to replace it; Gear indicator probably won't work; watch for noisy engines.
This was one I bought a year ago http://www.flickr.com/photos/81929179@N00/2361255064/ I had a choice from 4 others..
If he's just toured europe and used it loads, then it'll be even more worn. I know these things are sturdy, but stuff wears out!
Bottom line, unless you are short of money and desperate for a K11, avoid. Never pay more than 1500 tops for an ex-police. I hate to sound like a moany bastard, but I really think you could do much better. Keep looking. _________________ 1992 K1100RS - Red and gold. |

Hi All
Well I have found another brick, its a 1999 K1100LTIC, i know about it being ex police but this has a stack of history and the phone number of the PO to confirm things with, He even kept a log of all the trips and miles he did.
High mileage (95000) but my last one had 114000 on it, not worried about that too much.
Been properly converted to civilian spec with the right side panels & rack and has been painted too.
I have been looking for ages and the few that were coming up were all older than my last one and worked out about the same sort of money.
I hope to pick it up at the weekend providing the insurance cheque clears!!! and i can get a flight, it is located in Ireland so have to get a ferry back to the UK then a 450 mile ride home, will be a good shakedown ride anyway.
Will let you all know how it goes and maybe post a few pics when i get back. _________________ 1999 K1100LTIC Smooth and Quiet Cruise, BFD & HID

Hi all
Little update for you, I recieved some paperwork from the Met Police today including a whitness statment to fill out about the accident, in the covering letter it had the phrase "as the victim in this crime you may be required to attend court to enable the case to proceed"
Looks very much like they (the Met) are going to prosecute the other driver for causing the accident, just hope it will teach him to look before turning out of traffic again.
I also have a bit of an argument with my insurance company going on, got the cheque for the bike LESS my excess, when i phoned them they said the third party insurer's were automatically countering the claim as "their insured had not been in contact with them about the claim" apparently they have to give him "reasonable time" to contact them before they accept liability and that "I would have to claim it from the Legal Assist claim" !!!!!
God damm cheek.
Oh and went to the Doctors today, seem like I have Cartilage damage in my right knee due to the accident, got to see a consultant over the next few weeks to find out how bad and what needs to be done.
