Monitor?
Replace?
Panic?
For replace, is it just the glass or is there a gasket as well?
Diagram just shows a glass. #16

I have read that others have "popped" the glass out using a long tool going up at an angle through the oil filter access hole. It's just held in there with an o-ring and/or some gasket sealer. I can research it more tomorrow. Is it leaking bad or just a drip now and then? _________________ Ride safe.

Hard to tell.
Its noticeable, but not a gusher.
Somewhere between a drip and a torrent. _________________ Bane of your existence since July 2006

Hi,
It is a seal - nothing more, nothing less - with a clear plastic window and a metal backing in the center instead of a shaft or something like that. To replace, you can drive a screwdriver into the plastic (from the outside) and lever it out, drive a heated awl-type device into the plastic and lever it out, drill a hole and lever it out (watch out for the shavings). But once you have the old one out, clean the hole (DON'T scratch it) and tap the new seal (sight glass) into place. Use a large socket which will bear on the sealing ring, not the clear plastic. It isn't too common for these glasses to fail in our bikes; it is much more common for them to leak or even blow out of oilhead motors (higher pressures from two big pistons going back and forth). The more common failure in our bikes is for the inside to get so dirty you can't be sure if you're seeing oil or a dirty sight glass.

Thanks Phil, the research I did says to do exactly what you described.
Waiting on a new one in the mail as we speak. _________________ Bane of your existence since July 2006

Well I've had the seal on my workbench for a few weeks now, but the truth is I have been a total Nancy about putting it in. Fear that if it was a catastrophic failure on re-insertion I would not be able to ride my brick for a few more weeks while waiting on a new one.
Well, my fears were unfounded. In a fit of desperation I took a thin screwdriver and violently hammered it into the old glass....and was surprised at how easy it was to lever out.
Conversely, the new glass took many a hard whack with the ball peen and 31mm socket to get it to seat correctly.
Haven't ridden yet, but will take a few rides looking at my right foot to make sure the new one isn't leaking/got popped out to set my mind at ease. _________________ Bane of your existence since July 2006
