Is there an easier procedure to remove the battery on my 96 RS than what is in the shop manual? It calls for removing a lot of stuff.
There is a procedure for this on a K100, but I'm not sure it applies here.
Thanks for any help.

The minimum you need to do is lift the seat, remove the Motronic above the battery, unscrew the 2 long screws above the battery holder which secure the retaining bracket, remove the RHS panel and disconnect the battery leads. You can then remove the battery. Fiddly but I am certain you can't do any less than this. Also don't forget to remove the battery breather hose connection to the battery (if fitted).

When removing the battery, disconnect the negative cable first. This way you won't accidentally short the battery to ground when disconnecting the positive cable. _________________ 2000 R1100RT

Not only that, but also connect the ground/earth cable last when reconnecting. _________________ Jim

A bit fiddly, but the best way by far. |

There's a small wire that connects to the Motronic. It might be a ground. When reinstalling the Motronic, make sure this wire is reconnected. _________________ 2000 R1100RT

It's a gournd. It doesn't really matter. How do I know? I found that mine had come off - bike ran fine withouut it. (I'm not saying you shouldn't connect it - I think you should.) _________________ 93 LT (x2)

I haven't personally replaced the battery in my K11 in some time. I pulled the old one a couple days ago and I'm installing a new PowerSonic battery that I got from a friend at a battery distributor. Perfect replacement, great cost (I get the buddy discount).
Anyways, I put some dielectric grease on the terminals and screwed down the positive terminal.
I notice there appear to be TWO leads for the negative. One is a fat one that goes towards the front of the bike. The other is fairly thick, but nowhere near as fat as the other and is attached or wrapped with the little lead that goes on the Motronic.
It has a battery type end on it and it seems obvious it goes there, but I've never seen two factory leads on a terminal before. I've often added small wires for powerlet or gps power before, but this seems unusual.
Bike is a 1997 K1100LT ABSII SE.
Does this seem familiar to anyone?
Edit:
The secondary negative lead goes into the Motronic harness. I hooked both leads up and reinstalled everything. Started up and ran fine for a minute or so, then I shut it off.

Yep, I have the same on both of my LT's as well. 2 ground leads to battery + the small one that goes to the motronic case. _________________ Ride safe.

Cool. Call me paranoid, but after losing my K11 to the paintshop for 4 months, the last thing I needed was to fry it changing a farkin' battery... _________________ M N B
