...is that there's noone to wave to.

Seriously though, It was about 27 when I headed out this morning, the only heated thing was grips, I had a polartec and my Columbia ski shell over it, and my First Gear pants on, without the liner.

Which brings up another thing.... I wouldn't ride when it got lower than 20 degrees, so what the hell is with the liner? Do people ride in negative temperatures?

I'm sure it's a marketing thing, and it's cheap enough to make a liner if it sells more pants, but... Damn. If I didn't need it this morning....

Oh, and I also just ordered the Tourmaster Synergy jacket from eBay, huge thanks to whoever pointed out that deal.

Yes.

I did 60 miles today driving from patient to patient.

Was beautiful after 12 or so. It's just too friggin cold in the morning, and no amount of gear will ever make that comfortable.

I agree. By the time it gets below 20, it's either frosty or snowing. I have an electric vest and I am toast. Cool

and you have to continually answer the "isn't it cold riding today" question.

I counter with "do you go snow skiing in a bathing suit"?

I had a great ride to my jobsite this AM at 26 degrees. Bracing! The ride home made it worth it through fall New Hampshire backroads. Two questions:

Does anyone have a suggestion for the best gloves to wear for heated grips? I've been wearing fairly thin leather to feel the heat better but when it's below freezing the backs of my hands get cold.

How much do others worry about cold tires going into turns?

Laughing I use the snowmobile reference. If I had a dollar for every time I've heard "It HAD to cold this morning" I wouldn't have to show up to work and look at their dumb asses! Laughing

I wear thin armored leather FirstGear gloves with glove liners that can accept those throw away warmers in the backs of the liner. The liners themselves break up the wind and trap heat very well while not being roasting or bulky. (I can still change the station on my Sirius radio with them)
And when it gets really cool I throw in the inserts, but I only used them 2-3 times last year.

A little, I worry about black ice and road snakes more. Like race cars, the tires warm up as you use them. I generally ride more conservatively in the colder months as a rule though.

+1 I ride more carefully in the cold as well.

I use my Gerbings to keep the back of my hands warm.

I have a pair of Olympia gore tex gloves that aren't very thick, I would call them middleweight.

I was planning on getting heated gloves, but I don't think I'll even need them. as long as I'm careful to keep my thumb wrapped around the grip, my hands stay plenty warm.

I was expecting some post-ride tingles after riding for an hour in 27-28 degrees, but it wasn't an issue.

I try and keep my thumbs around the grips as well but I still have the tip of my thumb get cold. I probably could have gone with the next size smaller gloves, since they have stretched a little bit, don't fit a snug.

I often take off before the sun comes up and worry about frosty on-ramps and bridge floors.

My handlebars are set so that hands are directly behind mirrors which makes a big difference blocking the wind and keeping hands warm.

I have a nice pair of kevlar winter gloves that I never use anymore (I don't even know what box they are in since we moved). The palms are too thick and I can't feel the heat from the grips through them. What I found works the best for me is the Icon super duty gloves. They are thin enough to let the heat through and with the leather over the knucles blocks the wind. For me I find that my hands act as a reverse radiator and absorbs the heat which sends it to my core. Once my hands are warm the rest of me stays warm. Sometime I feel that it is too warm but I don't want to lower the heated grips for fear of the bike bursting into flames.

That is just brilliant.

I hadn't even thought of the helmet frosting over. Wow.

I'd almost go for the heated visor! Surprised
That's at the top of my list of what I don't like about riding in the winter is a fogged up visor.
