changing the relay for my drive lights (which seems to have fixed the intermittent cutting out) I may have dislodged something under the tank.. my left heated grip now doesn't work. Never had a problem til now and can't see anything amiss. Anyone got any ideas where I should look first/next?
I've done a search but there doesn't seem to be any advice specific to one failing.. _________________ Cheers, Steve H _______________________________________

I'd start by pulling of fhe left bar end and checking the voltage where the wires connect to the heating element. Then work backawrds from there. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

It has a plastic cap. Twist it clockwise while pulling and the cap should come off. Then there's an Allen head bolt. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

The stock heated grips are one of the few weak points on the motobrick. See the sticky thread at the top of the forum.
Mine almost started a fire in my wiring cluster, so proceed with caution....started the same way too...left grip failed, had it resoldered, worked for 1 day then smoke from wiring cluster.
I replaced with an aftermarket unit and haven't looked back since. _________________ Bane of your existence since July 2006

Resoldering is pointless since the heating element wires are steel. IT is possible to temporarily reconnect them at the grips using rear window defogger repair kits for cars but that is not a long term fix fomr what I've heard..
The smoke/fire thing is caused by the resistive part of the low setting circuit. It can be avoided by not using the Low setting. IF you only push the switch up and use the high setting then there's no risk of the resistive elelment causing a short.
If you're riding with the HGs on low and you smell smoke or your gauges suddenly loose power, pull over rimmidiately. The heated grips are on the same fuse (#1) as the gauges.
Here's write-up on doing aftermarket grips:

right.. looks like my best option is to replace with aftermarket ones rather than try and repair. I wondered if I had disturbed something under the tank but can't immediately see anything out of place or disconnected..
Naturally this happens with the coldest time of the year fast approaching!
Thanks a lot for the advice gents. _________________ Cheers, Steve H _______________________________________
