The purpose of this is to run LEDs.
In looking at the wiring diagram, it looks very straightforward:
With the BMU removed, I will do the following at the now empty relay socket:
Short the front brake switch wire(Gray/Red) and the rear brake switch wire(Gray/Green) to the Rear brake light(Gray/Yellow.)
Short the tail light power(Green/Black) to the tail light wire(Gray/Black)
Voila! LEDs and no more BMU.
I'll also rewire my sidestand switch setup so that it will now illuminate the BMU indicator in the cluster when the sidestand is down. (Currently wired to the low fuel lamp.)
I'll still have a filament bulb in the brake light because the cruise control monitors that with a low reverse current so an LED would disable the cruise control.. If that bulb goes out then all it will do is cause the cruise not to work which will let me know the bulb is out. I have several LEDs hooked into the brake light circuit if the bulb does fail so it won't be a safety issue.
Next project: Purchase an LED flasher relay to replace the OEM flasher relay. Then I can run LED turn signals bulbs and not have to worry about adding resistors to avoid the hyperflash.
This looks pretty easy - wish I'd thought of it before. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Duck!
Provide prints and the LED's and I will buy!
Still have to get the '85 K bike dismantled for pics and cataloging...
New Years Resolution perhaps... |

It's not a kit. I was just reporting what I've done.
There's a few things to note if you do this:
Tail light LED: In WA (and I think all states) the law requires that you use white light to illuminate the license plate so the tail light LED has to be a 360 degree white LED. In general with LEDs, you should use an LED that is the same color as the lens though. On my bike I have white LED tail lights to meet the legal requirement and it looks a little pink through the red tail light lens. Not a big deal but something to consider.
Brake switches: One of the functions of the BMU is to test the brake light switches. When you remove it you loose that functionality. This isn't a big concern to me as I usuallly check the brake light/switches when I do a pre-ride check. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Mr. Duckā¦
I get it now, appreciate your insight, and understand the legalities of producing a kit!
Thanks for the putting the info out for all of us to benefit from.
The bulb monitor has been a thorn in my side since the K100 1985 version days! |

I replaced my tail light with a matrix of LED's from an ex Govt bus stop light.
Very simple to separate the lens and remove the reflector inside (Dremel), chop to bits to allow fitting of cct board and gluing back together. I got around the red LED's by inserting a strip of three white LED's facing downward to illuminate the licence plate. In hindsight, one LED would have sufficed.
I removed the Brake monitoring bulb from the instrument panel and VIOLA, no stupid warning light. _________________ Regards,

I too have converted my tail and brake light with LED Panels and with some simple wiring through a relay to earth, I am still able to use the Cruise Control.
The rego plate is illuminated by 3 white LEDS focused down onto the rego plate. My red warning light for the BMU is connected up to the sidestand and operates when the sidestand is down. It's a bit like Daja Vu... isn't it? _________________ Gary

I was playing around with the fork lock and realized that the way I had things wired that the tail light does not come on with the parking light like it should when the ignition switch is all the way counter-clockwise.
How to correct it so that the tail light comes on with the parking light:
Old:
Short the tail light power(Green/Black) to the tail light wire(Gray/Black)
New:
Short the #2 fuse and parking light(Gray/White-2 wires) to the tail light wire(Gray/Black) _________________ 93 LT (x2)
