Go with Fred Rowland - screw those e-bay bike breakers - Freds parts are from wrecked m/c's.
Fred is a stand up guy - if you were to get a bad one from him - he will make it right - will the e-bay doofuss do the same? _________________ Dave Norris KOG 248

I called Fred Rowland at Cycles Recycled and he quoted me 400$ for a BLACK 93 LT tranny with 36k on it and 75$ for the fairing bracket.

That price from Fred sounds like a winner......that's more than what they wanted for my R100/7 a few years ago.
Note: Nobody has mentioned replacing the clutch and rear seal.
May want to consider doing all this "while your at it"...

Last question guys, thinking of doing the clutch while I am in there, but just want to do the friction plate and not the pressure plates. Is this acceptable?

Well heres the sad update.
The tranny Fred was going to ship has a damaged case from the accident that totaled the bike. He offered me a reduced price for the tranny but my mechanic said no way....about 5x the labor to swap out internals, replace seals, shim everything and hope it works.
So my hunt for a tranny continues....Drake yours looks ok, (and the price is great) but that it almost the same amount of mine that just broke...I want to find one with less miles....I would feel like riding with a loaded gun on a tranny with that many miles.
Who knows as time goes by and my options dry up I might take you up on it.
In addition, the fairing bracket he has is bent, and my mechanic also says no go for that as well.

Dave I feel pretty successful with the repaired bracket but only time will tell. My caution would be to resist the temptation to build it up too much with reinforcement. There is only about enough room for a standard washer where the bottom of the ignition lock swings past it as the steering travels to the right lock. I'm nearly done putting mine back together but it's been too cold to work in the barn.
Bad luck on the transmission. It being winter I wonder if it might be worth opening yours up to see if it might be repairable. _________________ Jim

Hind sight being 20/20, that's how I went after my engine problems--into it to repair. Would have been better off getting a used one. Cost me $1500(1200 engine work 300 water/oil pump rebuild) by the time I was done.
Lesson learned.
Sorry to hear about your problems Dave, hang in there. you'll find one. They are out there, keep looking. _________________ Ride safe.

Hindsight works both ways though. If you had put in a used engine and had major failure after 5,000 miles you would be on the other side of the question. If you fix it, at least you know where you stand. With parts costing what they do it's a tough sell. I'm just saying _________________ Jim

There's no way in hell I'm cracking (or paying for cracking, for that matter) that transfer case open to repair it.
I've half a mind to throw in Drakes Tranny and just sell the bike and get a Bandit 1200 and a dual sport. I'm tired of throwing money at this bike.
Hell, with the amount of work I put into the bike last year I could part it out and come out ahead if so inclined.
Like my mechanic says....the engine might be built to go 200+k miles, but everything else on the bike is not. What's the next thousand dollar thing to go? The ABS? The Engine? Major electronic failure? Mystery stalling?
42 degrees and sunny today...and I should be on the road. _________________ Bane of your existence since July 2006

I just had an interesting talk with Chris Harris at Affordable Beemer Service in Manchester NH. He says the transmissions are imprecisely machined as new and the way to rebuild them is to have the gears undercut by a guy named Bruno in Canada. If he has a rebuilt transmission it would probably be worth it. http://www.affordablebeemerservices.com/ _________________ Jim

That's exactly what my mechanic said....it's not simply swapping out the internals, you have to shim everything, replace the gaskets and hope it's all lined up and working correctly.
Like others said it's a huge undertaking. _________________ Bane of your existence since July 2006

Dave I think you would like talking with Chris at ABS by phone or email. His knowledge on this topic might help you make your decision. He thinks we'll all face this decision if we ride them long enough and the only thing that might help postpone the inevitable is synthetic oil in the transmission. Apparently the gears are slightly rounded when new and the undercutting process puts a hard edge on the teeth, improving shifting and making the transmission better than new. _________________ Jim
